are looking for an editor to lead a team of reporters who specialize in community, political and public safety journalism in some of the most diverse communities in America. We seek an editor who is willing to coach our staff with ambition, grit and determination to tell the best stories in New Jersey.

Our team covers the northern New Jersey counties of Bergen, Passaic, Morris and Essex. We are particularly focused on education, real estate and development, municipal malfeasance and public safety.

Our newsroom's tradition of quality, accuracy and deep commitment to the sustaining the public trust guides all of our work. We are deeply committed to watchdog journalism that shines light on New Jersey's darkest corners.

We're seeking an editor who is comfortable helping reporters draft freedom of information requests, who can help reports use and analyze data sets to inform our report. Further, we seek an editor who is capable and comfortable developing our writers — delivery of clear, approachable journalism has never more important as we grow our digital audience.

Finally, we seek an editor who can adapt to change in a constantly-evolving environment. Flexibility is our watchword — especially given our ongoing work to lead efforts to cover breaking news across the greater New York City region for the USA TODAY NETWORK.

The Record and are headquartered in Woodland Park, adjacent to Paterson, New Jersey — just 12 miles to the George Washington Bridge and Manhattan. In addition to our primary products, our staff also contributes to the Daily Record and of Morristown, the Herald News of Passaic County, (201) magazine and our portfolio of more than 30 weekly publications. In addition, our staff and daily report are closely coordinated with those of rthe Asbury Park Press and The Journal News of Westchester and Rockland counties in New York.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have editing experience in a digitally focused newsroom.
  • Know how to help reporters tell stories in real time and include alternate story forms and visual elements that drive the narrative.
  • Understand how metrics and analytics can help us determine how to best reach our audience.
  • Know how to turn readers into subscribers by helping reporters tell relevant stories that sing.
  • Be a teacher, not just an editor. After all, everyone needs a coach.
  • Be courageous about experimentation.
  • Be a team player who likes to collaborate with their coworkers.
  • Be able to work with reporters who are spread across multiple newsrooms.


  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related field preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 3 years' experience as an editor/coach, and at least 7 years' experience in a digitally focused newsroom.
  • Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
  • Must embrace peer-to-peer training, as a both a teacher and student.
  • Experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
  • Experience editing and shaping watchdog and investigative journalism.
  • Exceptional planning and organizational skills.
  • Understanding use of metrics, social-media and SEO knowledge.
  • Self-motivation and self-direction.
  • Strong grasp of journalism skills (reporting and editing) and advanced knowledge of writing, spelling, grammar, AP and local style.
  • Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Applies innovative, creative thinking to support the company's goals.
  • News often requires employees to work extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays, sometimes unexpectedly.
