Manages and maintains all Microsoft SQL Server production and non-production databases. Responsible for standards and design of physical data storage, maintenance, access and security administration. Performs backup and recovery of Database Management Systems, configures database parameters, and prototype designs against logical data models, and defines data repository requirements, data dictionaries and warehousing requirements. Provides technical leadership and operational expertise for the implementation, architecture, design, ongoing support and maintenance of institutional databases and related software systems. Works with multiple IT teams and University departments to develop, maintain, and enhance databases and related applications.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesDevelops and maintains a documented database strategy, including standards, design, maintenance, replication, archiving, access and security to support departmental and organizational needs. Manages and maintains all MS SQL Server production and non-production databases, including performing backups, recovery and validation, as well as reporting on database statistics. Proactively manages the database environment to identify and recommend alternatives to poorly coded applications, including consulting with end users to recommend the most appropriate database solution. Applies patches, installs software, manages database environment, monitors performance, and troubleshoots alerts. Optimizes database configurations for optimal configuration, performance and cost. Maintains current knowledge and keeps management informed of products, developments and trends in database management and software. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required QualificationsBachelor’s degree with coursework in computing or information systems. Three to five (3-5) years of experience working with various database management systems in database design, testing, implementation, maintenance and administration in a multiple platform environment or the equivalent experience. The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are required: Knowledge of Database Administration for Microsoft SQL Server in an Enterprise environment. Extensive knowledge of T-SQL. Experience in troubleshooting and resolving database problems. Experience in Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO), profiling, and using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools. Experience with backups, restores and recovery models. Knowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for MS SQL Server. Experience in implementing operational automation using scripts. Knowledge of indexes, index management, and statistics. Experience working with Linux/Windows servers, including Active Directory. Good communication and documentation skills.
Preferred QualificationsBachelor’s degree with coursework in computing or information systems and five (5+) years of experience working with various database management systems in database design, testing, implementation, maintenance and administration in a multiple platform environment. Certification is a plus; MCTS, MCITP, or MVP. Experience with Database Administration for MySQL/PostgreSQL/Oracle in an Enterprise environment. Experience integrating MS SQL Server with SharePoint.
