Description:
This position reports to the Assistant Manager of Ambulatory CT/MRI or MRI Assistant Manager and follows established procedures.
The MRI Technologist operates the magnetic resonance imaging scanner to obtain images for use by physicians for diagnosis and treatment.
The technologist positions patients for procedures and administers injections of contrast media.
They operate scanners to visualize pathologies and manipulate images to create optimal studies.
The technologist distributes images to the PACS system and reproduces images on alternate media as necessary.
They demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate patient care for all age groups.
Duties may vary by assigned area or shift but the following functions are essential:

Receives, reviews, and evaluates physician orders and patient schedules for MRI exams.
May contact physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to verify or clarify orders.
Greets patients and prepares them for MRI exams, ensuring proper identification and assisting with dressing.
Follows guidelines to properly identify patients and maintain patient safety.
Explains procedures to patients to reduce anxieties and obtain cooperation.
Interviews patients or family members to obtain relevant medical histories and verifies allergies and renal function.
Screens female patients for the possibility of pregnancy and completes necessary documentation.
Prepares examination rooms by turning on equipment and ensuring it is in working order.
Assists patients on and off of the MRI scanner using proper techniques and positioning patients for optimal images.
Operates magnetic resonance imaging equipment and adjusts settings to obtain the best possible images.
Uses various peripheral equipment such as disc drives and contrast injectors.
Demonstrates the use of communication devices to allow patient-technologist interaction during procedures.
Observes patients through a control room window and monitors safety and comfort via closed circuit TV or speaker devices.
Performs intravenous injections and administers contrast media while following sterile techniques.
May collect routine lab specimens to check patient status and ensures proper labeling and processing.
Ensures images and documentation include accurate information.
Reviews images to determine quality of the exam and identifies the need for retakes if necessary.
Uses computer programs to obtain medical history, order exams, and track patient throughput.
Completes all required documentation for exams and routes images using various computer systems.
Participates in quality assurance programs to reduce errors and maintain optimal image quality.
Maintains files and records and prepares statistical reports.
Conveys equipment malfunctions to appropriate personnel for timely repairs.
Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly condition and monitors inventory for supplies.
May perform clerical tasks as needed.
Stays current with developments in MRI procedures and equipment through education and training.
May supervise or demonstrate MRI methods for students or other personnel.
May be involved in transporting materials between locations which may require vehicle operation.
The technologist may provide 24/7 coverage in support of Trauma Center needs while on duty or on call.
