POSITION SUMMARY

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) will beresponsible for carrying out educational field activitiesassociated with new and existing information in the recognition and treatment of selected neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. The target audience may include physicians, scientists, other clinicians (nurse-practitioners and physicians assistants,nurses,pharmacists, other allied health professionals), managed markets payers, and advocacy groups.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The MSL will be broadly responsible for:

  • Cultivating relationships with current and emerging thought leaders in academic and clinical practice settings to facilitate the exchange of scientific information
  • providing research results and disease state concepts at a level appropriate for the audience
  • facilitating the use of Avanir’s medical, educational and research services
  • developing creative and innovative strategies for addressing the specific educational needs of key internal and external audiences
  • Goals will be accomplished by the development and execution of a territory medical plan in concert with Medical Affairs and Company overall strategies.
  • Strive for clinical excellence and improved health outcomes
  • Identify, develop, and maintain relationships with key opinion leaders and advocates to increase awareness of symptoms in target neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders
  • Provide individual and group based clinical presentations and information in response to unsolicited questions (as appropriate) in academic, community, healthcare and managed care provider settings
  • Increase company and product awareness amongst external audiences on new advances in the management of neuropsychiatric diseases and disorders
  • Advance regional disease or therapeutic knowledge by facilitating key opinion leader development regarding disease states, clinical trials and other related research
  • Disseminate medical information to regional and national key opinion leaders as requested
  • Facilitate and moderate scientific peer discussions including advisory panels, investigator meetings, speaker training and educational programs
  • Develop and train key opinion leaders to participate on speaker’s bureaus for regional or national educational programs
  • Provide medical support and training for internal colleagues including support at internal meetings (manager’s meetings, POAs, product launches, MSL training, new medical affairs colleagues, etc.)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in clinical or patient level care or bench research.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Medical Affairs or similar department within the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry
  • Ability to work within Pharm compliance guidance regarding interactions with healthcare professionals
  • Neurology or psychiatry experiencepreferred; geriatric or long term care experience beneficial
  • Expert presentation skills, dissemination of medical information in one-on-one and group dynamics, presentation abilities on both slides and posters
  • Good Understanding of principles of clinical trial design and execution
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and effectively communicate scientific / medical concepts of disease states, disorders, and drug products to the medical community at a level corresponding to the educational background and expertise of the audience
  • Demonstrated ability to operate autonomously, meeting monthly and quarterly goals and objectives
  • Ability to travel at least 50%; attend regional and international conferences / workshops to obtain new competitive information, keep abreast of clinical trends and support, and maintain relationships with key investigators and scientific research
  • Ability to organize and prioritize own work schedule; time management skills
  • Ability to make decisions which have a significant impact on Medical Affairs / Avanir credibility, operations and services
  • Ability to contribute to materials such as reports, spreadsheets, presentations for internal and approved external use
