ABB operates in more than 100 countries with about 147,000 employees. www.abb.com As the External Communications and Media Relations Manager, you will be responsible for managing the power business brand reputation in ABB US Power Business by ensuring ABB Power Business' identity is positioned strategically, and the brand message is consistent, timely, and relevant. The person in this role will be responsible for elevating the image and reputation of the power business with compelling content and storytelling that resonates with key external audiences: media, community leaders, and customers while aligning with corporate global messages. You will be the lead corporate spokesperson in reputation and crises situations and will be assisted by a world-class team covering communication in the US as well as be a part of the larger external communication community. Your activity will be national/local, your mindset should be global. The successful candidate will use a highly collaborative and transparent approach working internally across business lines, as well as externally. Additionally, proven innovative approaches to pro-actively develop opportunities for publishing content and the ability to operate in a highly dynamic environment will be keys to success.


Tasks:

Main responsibilities:

1. Develop and implement an integrated media plan to advance the power business brand identity in the country that aligns with ABB's strategy and messaging; broaden awareness of the ABB Power Business' market leadership and increase the visibility of its products and services across key stakeholder audiences in the US.

2. Work closely with stakeholders to identify and develop compelling stories, pitches, press releases, both general and technical ones, speeches, presentations, fact sheets, and position papers for the US market

3. Proactively engage with national, business and key trade media independently and by working with agencies

4. Support key leaders in the country with thought leadership content, media guidance and speaking opportunities

5. Work with the global team to create and manage announcements and campaigns, media strategy. Ensure global messages are localized for the US market

6. Provide direction and support to all media spokespersons in the US region as needed. Ensure key leaders receive media and crisis communications training

7. Proven ability to lead and plan complex activities including but not limited to synthesizing market/product data from multiple businesses and developing compelling stories that support the company's key messages and strategy

8. Plan, support, prepare and manage responses to positive and negative inquiries from externals sources – includes crisis and issue-related media and social media escalations and responses

Specific tasks:

- Editorial service, including the writing and editing of press releases, both general and technical ones, speeches, position papers, presentations, fact sheets

- Ensure consistent content and messaging for thought leadership positioning

- Social media savvy

- Building and maintain relations with legacy and new media

- Organizing media tours

- Story telling

- Act as a center of competence in the group: being able to help to raise the competence level in the group

- Train and coach spokespeople

Interdependencies:

- Work closely with the Division Communications Head in developing a local/national communications strategy/thought leadership plan

- Define processes/planning/external monitor activities to reflect business priorities and long-term positioning, in line with the global strategy

- Work in close collaboration with the global external communications community

- Work closely with Business Unit communications teams

- Manage external media agencies to define a strategy and report on the media outreach results

Requirements:

Basic Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree in Communications, business or other related discipline required.

- 10+ years professional experience with 7+ years relevant experience in media and content interactions, ideally with an interest in technology and innovation

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience with cross function communications with focus on editorial (media, investors, branding, editorial, web, internal, etc.)

- Understanding of the technology industry and customers, as well as financial markets

- Experience in working across country lines

- Proven understanding of digital communications channels and the power of social media

- Proven exceptional writing/editing and oral communication skills (writing samples will be requested)

- Solid experience in dealing with media requests, both generalist as well as trades

- Proven track record in building strong thought leadership programs

- Proven experience to analyze and develop relevant metrics in dealing with different stakeholders

- Fluent in English, other languages are an advantage (native or near-native English language skills would be preferred)

- Basic knowledge of industrial technology/capital equipment sectors

- Direct work experience with senior management
