Director of Engineering


This position requires lawful access to ITAR/EAR controlled information. Join us and help us bring manufacturing of next-generation healthcare laser products to Rochester, NY. As part of our Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (AME) team at Melles Griot, you will move technology from our development center in California to our high-quality, cost-effective manufacturing factory in Rochester, NY. In this high-profile role, you will develop your manufacturing and leadership skills as you assist engineers in learning, documenting, and teaching our laser manufacturing processes. Your technical and creative skills will be stretched as you continually strive to develop better procedures and obtain better results. Some travel to California will be required.


Based in Rochester, NY IDEX Health & Science’s line of products is comprised of a Light Sources Group and an Optical Systems Group. The Light Sources Group manufactures a variety of visible, low to moderate power lasers and laser-based systems uniquely designed for consistent performance. The Light Sources Group offers three basic types of lasers: gas (helium-neon and ion lasers), diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers, and semiconductor diode laser assemblies. The Optical Systems Group provides the design, prototype and low to mid volume manufacturing of custom lens assemblies and optical systems. The Optical Systems Group also specializes in the design of reliable shutter mechanisms and assemblies.

This position manages, guides, audits and coordinates the work of Mechanical Engineering team and support staff placing particular emphasis on developing new engineering solutions and products consistent with the appropriate timelines and budgets. This position is responsible for overseeing the development of system architectures, participating and leading the design, tolerancing, and build of optics-based instruments and assemblies. This position is required to support OEM business and the product development goals of the company and to support ongoing production. Other functions may be assigned, and management retains the discretion to add or change duties.


  • Capability to generate accurate personnel, materials, schedule and budgets requirements in support of complex engineering proposals, and meet those estimates
  • Aptitude to interface with customers to determine their needs, to present options and results in a manner consistent with a good business sense
  • Ability to understand optical design requirements and translate them into corresponding mechanical designs
  • Assist the Test and Assembly Department personnel, as needed, to produce optical systems
  • Complies with health and safety policies and procedures
  • Direction and coordination of all Optical Engineering activities and personnel
  • Expert knowledge of 3D modeling using CAD software (SolidWorks highly preferred)
  • In-depth understanding of mechanical and optomechanical principles and practices
  • Interface with optomechanical and CAD designers to define tooling and optical mounting, based on predicted worst-case optical tolerances
  • Manages and consistently implements the Peer Design Review Process to improve the appropriateness, cost-effectiveness, and accuracy of all departmental design activities
  • Participates in proposal development, NRE estimates and technical statements of work
  • Provide detailed design and test requirements documentation for procurement and fabrication of optical and mechanical components. Deliver accurate test requirements and support design/ verification of test fixtures
  • Responsible for career pathing and development of Optical Engineering Team
  • Supports company values including ethical conduct and high integrity in all actions
  • Work with Optical and Test engineers to generate top-down architecture design, conduct in-depth analytical trade studies of possible technical approaches, topologies, tools, and architectures. Develop designs for components, systems, and products utilizing product specifications as a starting point; perform functional and physical verification of the design
  • Working knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), per ANSI standard


  • Aptitude to work with assembly and test technicians to develop and debug test procedures

  • Eight years related experience providing technical direction to staff and their direct reports; or equivalent combination
  • Fifth-year college or university program certificate; B.S. in Mechanical Engineering
