The Materials Manager manages control functions including masterscheduling, shop floor control, inventory planning and control, purchasing, MRO crib, and shipping providing focus and direction on continuous improvement in safety, quality, delivery, cost reduction, and inventory.

This position manages a team consisting of buyers, planners, schedulers, and supervisors.


  1. Identifying, initiating, and leading projects to improve service, quality, and operational performance.
  2. Proactively evaluate current processes and systems to identify continuous improvement opportunities within the extended value stream and develop and implement best practices in supply chain disciplines.
  3. Manages and reviews inputs (Sales, Operations, and Inventory Planning process (SOIP), cycle counting, physical inventory, profit planning) and controls (min./max. levels, lead times, etc.) of the ordering process to ensure that inventory levels (purchase parts, WIP, finished goods, consignment, in-transit etc.) to meet division and corporate expectations.
  4. Maintains optimum inventory levels to ensure on-time deliveries to meet customer requirements while maximizing turns, minimizing carrying costs and premium transportation charges.
  5. Lead and assist in other departments, in particular training, coaching and developing others through lean material principles.
  6. Manage the market and receiving areas. Responsible for developing and improving the internal materials delivery system by using Material Flow (MMF) and Continuous Flow (CCF) processes.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of process improvement concepts and methods along with the flexibility and adaptability to accept, support, and deploy new processes in a changing business environment.
  2. An in-depth knowledge and understanding of manufacturing processes and hands on experience and knowledge of MRP systems, planning and executions, supply chain management practices, bills of material, and knowledge of material control scheduling.
  3. Develop relationships built on trust and integrity to be the “expert of choice” among team and colleagues.
  4. Effective communications skills at both technical and leadership levels. Must include strong interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to understand information and ideas as presented.
  5. Skill in conflict resolution including the ability to address difference of opinions or facts and use the most appropriate method to reach an effective solution.
  6. Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize time/workload and delegate work in order to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines.
  7. Ability to effectively coach and foster staff growth and development.
  8. Ability to negotiate by collaborating withothers to arrive at a conclusion using compromise, persuasion, rationale, and diplomacy.

Required Education and Experience:

  1. BS/BA Degree in Business, Materials Management/Engineering, Sourcing and/or related field required.
  2. CPM, CSCP, CPIM or other professional certification for procurement or supply chain is a plus.
  3. At least five 5 years materials experience that includes purchasing, planning, forecasting and inventory control management in a heavy manufacturing environment.
  4. Proven track record in the following areas:
  5. Demand management tools such as SIOP or Master Scheduling
  6. Material flow optimization through tools such as Lean, Visual Management, and Supplier Value Stream Mapping
  7. Project Management related to supply chain management (inventory reduction, product changes, converting inventory, etc.)
