Director of Operations- Optical Filters

BUSINESS UNIT OVERVIEW:
IDEX Health & Science -Semrock, Inc. – based in Rochester, New York – develops and manufactures high-performance optical thin-film filters that set the standard for biotech and analytical instrumentation. Semrock is a rapidly growing company, with revenue from both the volume OEM sales of tailored products and from the sales of standard catalog products to end-users. Semrock’s optical filter products are set apart by their state-of-the-art performance and reliability. Major markets include optical filters for fluorescence imaging and measurement systems, for Raman spectroscopy systems, and for laser-based analytical instrumentation.
SCOPE OF ROLE:
Finishing Staffing and Capacity: This person will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the finishing department at Semrock consisting of the coring value stream, the dicing value stream, and the custom shop value stream. The teams include 20 associates covering 2 shifts and ranging in experience from Level 1 to 3, 2 technicians, and a supervisor. They are currently supported by 3 manufacturing engineers and 2 production planners. The manufacturing manager will be responsible for adherence to the company quality policies with regards to training and certification, drive the 5S program to standard work and sustaining mode, make all staffing and capacity related decisions to support the production schedules. Key success factors will be in sustaining the corporate safety record, improving the department quality return rates for workmanship issues, maintaining >98% OTD performance, and managing costs within budget.
Continuous Improvement: The manager shall also be a critical player in the growth of the company through working more efficiently. They should take full ownership of the value streams and understand existing and potential bottle necks within their work centers. Working with the engineering and continuous improvement teams, they should select, execute, and sustain critical projects targeted at increasing either the efficiencies or capabilities of the department. Key success factor will be improving the manufacturing cycle times, minimizing the scrap rates, and increasing the revenue per FTE from each value stream.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE &, QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
Applicant should have a minimum of 5-10 years of experience and demonstrated success in leading a high mix, low volume manufacturing team.
The role requires superior motivation skills as the candidate must excel at creating dynamic work teams and building trust between team members.
The role requires excellent communication skills as the candidate must be able to effectively present data and issues to all levels in the organization (Senior Leaders through Production Associates).
The role requires the ability to work in cross functional teams to solve and/or lead process improvements.
Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Daily Management, Value Stream Mapping, and Six Sigma problem solving concepts is preferred.
