 The Managing Director (MD) is responsible for the day-to-day management of all aspects of running a large and highly-ranked academic unit. This position will take a leading role in determining strategy for the Department of Agronomy (in collaboration with the Head, faculty, staff, and students, with additional input from our state and regional stakeholders). Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Developing strategic plans; formulating operational projects and processes to implement the strategic plans and monitoring and reporting on performance of the Department
  • Contributing to increasing the research activities and funding of the Department by working with the Head and faculty to build multidisciplinary projects involving other academic units, Discovery Park, and collaborators at other institutions 
  • Supporting development efforts of the Department by collaborating with the Development Director and the Head in interacting with alumni and industrial partners and planning development activities
  • Serving on Faculty Search Committees, supervise the candidate visit/interview process, coordinate with the Head and Business Manager to finalize offers and startup packages, and work on new faculty relocation (post-hire visits, spousal job search)
  • Ensuring effective communications for the Department to its stakeholders and constituents by overseeing the web presence, supporting the creation of news releases, marketing and engagement materials, department pages in College and University magazine, social media and interactive displays
  • Planning, organizing and carrying out development, educational and research events and activities for the Department
  • Administratively supervise the administrative staff of the Department
  • Leading teams of staff and faculty in various management, operational, and collaborative efforts
  • Working with the Business Office and Head of Department on financial planning and budgeting
  • Working with the superintendent of Agronomy Center for Research and Education (ACRE) to implement management plans and track progress

Qualifications

 Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Agronomy or another branch of Agriculture, Science, Engineering or Management/Business
  • Six years of professional experience
  • Significant experience serving in a senior managerial role, and/or research management role in industry, consulting, academia, or government
  • Experience in proposal development
  • Experience in defining strategic directions for organizations and implementing those directions
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills
  • interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Self-motivated and have the ability to exercise sound judgment in prioritizing tasks
  • Ability to supervise technical, administrative/professional and clerical staff
  • Ability to manage all aspects of an organization from strategic planning to tactical decision making to operational execution
  • Entrepreneurial spirit
  • Valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license

Preferred:

  • MS Degree preferred
  • Knowledge of fiscal planning/budgeting
  • Knowledge and experience within the field of Agriculture, including research directions, curriculum requirements, professional organizations, and career trajectories
