Our Opportunity:

The Wide Area Network (WAN) Engineering team builds technology solutions to support the Internet, Data Centers and Office WANnetwork of Charles Schwab & Co.  This includes working with business units, subsidiaries, multiple Schwab Technology departments as well as external vendors to develop technology solutions for the Firm.  The WANEngineering team will be expected to define networkinfrastructure requirements, engineer high availability solutions as well as participate in new product selection and validation. The team will actively participate in business driven projects, provide consulting services for various project teams, oversight of vendor management and contract negotiations as well as develop and adhere to lifecycle roadmaps through the purchase of software and hardware solutions. This position requires an enthusiastic, value driven, thought leader to lead and support the WANEngineering team.

What you’ll do:

The WANEngineering Director will have the opportunity to help shape the next generation network strategy and solutions for Charles Schwab & Co. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record building and managing engaged teams that are responsible for highly available and resilient networks. The leader should have a thorough understanding of current and upcoming designs and related technology trends.
The role will be accountable for the day to day management of the staff and infrastructure. These duties include leading a highly technical team, overseeing all aspects of wide-area networkengineering as well as infrastructure management and also develop and drive the next generation wide area network solutions. The team will design and engineer solutions, perform in-depth technical evaluations and provide assistance to support teams when required. They will also provide input and administer the annual budget, monitor and optimize vendor expenditures and collaborate with the Finance Office on fiscal and budgetary issues. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Manage Engineering for all Schwab Wide Area Networks
  • Collaborate with othertechnology teams in the engineering of the next generation WANarchitecture
  • Define, document and communicate WAN standards
  • Work closely with key technology vendors, manage and engage with working groups
  • Build an agile and productive technology team
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with various levels of people both internal and external to the organization

What you have:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science/Information Systems or Engineering
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience managing large scale, highly available network implementations
  • Carrier ExperiencePreferred
  • Deep knowledge and background of Internet and networking technology
  • Knowledge of legacy and next-generation wide-area networkengineering practices, services and technologies
  • Strong awareness of current trends in networkengineering within Financial Services
  • Experience in highly regulated environments, including maintaining controls, PCI, SOX, and other related controls
  • Experience with all aspects of the technology life cycle including planning, acquisition, introduction, operations and retirement
  • Experienceworking with vendors to improve relationships, understanding product roadmaps, defining future capabilities and overseeing the contractual process, including negotiating terms, and pricing
  • Experience planning and managing large budgets
  • Strong ability to present complex technical concepts to a range of technical and non-technical audiences at all levels
  • Strong collaborative, cooperative and motivational approach to leadership and management
  • Demonstrated strategic thinker with the ability to develop long term plans and effectively execute against them
  • Commitment to service delivery excellence
  • Familiar with process methodologies and effective Workflow tools and processes (ITIL, Lean, Agile)
  • Previous experience in Financial Services a plus
  • Equivalent experience at a comparable corporation in terms of size and complexity
  • Systems documentation skills including RFP generation, response analysis and findings presentation
  • Experience with business continuity and disaster recovery planning
