Department Overview

The Senior Counsel, Wealth Legal, will be a member of the Canadian Wealth Management Legal Team located in Toronto and will report to the Vice President, Legal, Wealth Management. The Canadian Wealth Management Legal Team consists of lawyers focused on providing advice and counsel to TD’s Canadian wealth and asset management businesses, including TD Asset Management, TD Investment Services, TD Waterhouse, TD Waterhouse Private Investment Counsel, as well as The Canada Trust Company. ?In this role you will join a dynamic and collegial team of professionals and be involved in a wide range of activities working to advance strategic priorities and ensuring proper risk oversight across these businesses.

Job Description

Working under the direction and supervision of the Vice President, Legal, Wealth Management, the Senior Counsel will:

  • Provide advice and counsel to TD’s wealth and asset management businesses on a wide range of legal and regulatory matters pertaining to these businesses
  • Identify key legal risks and appropriate ways to mitigate them, ensuring awareness among relevant stakeholders and other members of the TD Legal Department
  • Engage in talent management and development activities within the Wealth legal team, leading and mentoring Counsel on the team in building a high performance team
  • Help manage external legal costs prudently through optimal use of internal and external resources
  • Work with Compliance, AML and Risk in reviewing and advising on regulatory developments pertaining to the wealth and asset management businesses
  • Provide project leadership on governance support and various initiatives and transactions, such as dealing with critical regulatory developments, supporting the launch of new product and service offerings or changes to existing products and services
  • Reviewing, drafting and negotiating contracts, client agreements and communications


  • Lawdegree from an accredited law school and qualified to practice law in Ontario
  • 10 -15years as a corporate-securities lawyer with a major law firm or in a large corporate environment with previous experience providing advice to wealth and/or asset management businesses
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to identify and focus on high value, high risk work
  • Ability to think critically and exercise excellent judgment
  • Ability to accurately assess legal risk within the business context
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, detail oriented, environment and manage multiple deadlines and priorities
  • Ability to deal effectively with senior officers within the businesses and have an impact and influence on decision-making
