Job Summary:

Manage, direct, and coordinate the operational activities of the wet laid machines, incoming water systems/treatment, effluent discharge systems and converting/rewinder equipment.  Effective execution of this role requires a high percentage of the production manager’s time to be on the manufacturing floor determining performance first hand, engaging employees on issues and continuous improvement ideas.  Responsible for overall profit and loss performance of the wet laid operations including but not limited to employee safety, manufacturing product, optimizing production schedule planning and execution, product quality and continuous improvement  by applying knowledge of production methods, processes, machines and equipment. Uses key metrics to determine performance and areas for improvement.  This position is responsible for the safety of manufacturing personnel and also applies appropriate metrics to work force activities to assure maximum utilization of resources.

Manages, develops, trains, coaches, and evaluates the members of the operations team.  This includes conducting annual performance appraisals for all direct reports. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Responsible for the safety of manufacturing personnel and insuring appropriate and effective training and communications are maintained throughout the year.
  2. Provides leadership and development of key personnel by establishing performance standards and accountabilities.  Builds, develops and manages the wet laid supervision, machine crews and rewinder personnel.  Capable of carrying out needed operations strategies and maintain positive employee relations through a strong manufacturing floor presence
  3. Provides direction and leadership to process engineering personnel. Instilling continuous improvement guidance in production processes across wet-laid assets and converting department.
  4. Establishes and works to achieve key manufacturing performance metrics designed and directed to produce business plan, or better, gross margin performance.  Elements to include optimization of labor, material variances, and key overhead accounts. 
  5. Leads engagement in continuous improvement on a daily basis using appropriate Lean Six Sigma (LSS) tools and techniques to achieve world class manufacturing performance. 
  6. Establish area key performance indicators (KPI’s) to effectively manage area deliverables, regarding safety, quality, delivery, downtime, OEE.
  7. Lead daily area team meeting with members to develop and execute production efforts.
  8. Plans and develops methods, work instructions, standard operating procedures and labor schedule for implementing activities.
  9. Develops and maintains a working relationship with the Marketing and Sales organization to ensure common understanding of manufacturing capabilities, market trends, and customer expectations.
  10. Visual management techniques are to be used to monitor production performance through establishing and reviewing visual controls for processes and equipment. Implements changes to improve product quality and overall manufacturing efficiency through analysis of performance data and root cause analysis.
  11. Recruits or requests assignment of personnel who have knowledge and experience in assigned areas within the wet laid operations.
  12. Investigates all safety issues promptly and uses appropriate continuous improvement tools, engineering, health and safety resources to determine root cause and corrective actions.  Takes appropriate actions to implement corrective actions quickly to insure employee safety.
  13. Reviews reports and records of activities to ensure that progress is being made toward specific production and margin objectives; modifies or changes methodology as required redirecting activities and attaining objectives.
  14. Assists in setting up budget allocations based on given budget; controls expenditures accordingly.
  15. Manages, develops, trains, coaches, and evaluates the members of the production team.  This includes conducting annual performance appraisals for all shift coordinators. 
  16. Coordination of time and attendance system / labor reporting, coupled with daily approval of time and attendance, including pay codes.
  17. Ensures that company policies and procedures are followed in a consistent manner is coordination with the Human Resource Department.
  18. Serve as an active participant in LSS programs that promote continuous improvement

Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities Required for Consideration as a Candidate:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Pulp and Paper Science, Engineering, Business Administration or equivalent in related field or experience.
  • Ten years’ experience in related management position in similar industry, including three years managing staff, programs and budgets.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical, presentation and interpersonal skills. 
  • Knowledge of financial systems in order to manage profit and loss, departmental cost and set standards.
  • Ability to organize, manage and control workflow; ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • One to three years working experience with lean manufacturing and Six Sigma principles

Additional Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Green or Black Belt certified
  • One to three years’ experience with ISO: 9001
  • Project Management skills
  • High level of business acumen
  • Work in a continuous manufacturing process, preferably with a paper machine.
