Job Description


The purpose of this position is to be responsible for all forms of ground transportation. This position is also responsible for the maintenance and development of all truck/rail transportation areas and resources.



  • Communicate with co-workers, management, clients and others in a courteous and professional manner. Conform with and abide by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions
  • Participate in a wide variety of special projects and compile a variety of special reports
  • Establish and maintain systems and controls that verify the integrity of all systems, processes and data, and enhance the company's value
  • Manage business unit budget and controls expenses effectively
  • Lead in the hiring, training, development and appraisal of employees
  • Ensure corrective action as necessary on a timely basis and in accordance with company policy
  • Keep up-to-date on information and technology affecting functional area(s) to increase innovation and ensure compliance
  • Oversee the activities of the business unit accounting for the accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports
  • Provide status of financial condition of the business unit by collecting, interpreting and reporting key financial data
  • Guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring and enforcing policies and procedures
  • Analyze market conditions and develop a business plan and budget
  • Suggest and implement changes to the strategy as conditions in the marketplace change

Customer Relations

  • Supervise, direct and coordinate activities of staff engaged in the efficient and effective management of truck and rail functions
  • Develop and execute an annual truck and rail strategy
  • Manage vendor relations, new vendor selection for trucking and rail who supply service to REG supply chain activities

Trucking & Rail

  • Oversee activities concerned with all modes of truck and rail transportation including determination of fleet size, negotiation of lease agreements, the preparation of bills of ladings for cars, rate negotiation, monitor payables, tracking all shipments to assure prompt delivery
  • Monitor utilization of leased rail car fleet to optimize investment in rail equipment
  • Responsible for the monthly reconciliation of rail freight accounts
  • Oversee the coordination of hauls and negotiating rates for shipments into and from REG biodiesel plants, terminals and third party trading partners by rail and truck
  • Track and approve all expenses related to truck and rail
  • Develop carrier strategies throughout the network on determining what is needed for transportation capacity
  • Maintain knowledge of all truck and rail agreements/terms.  Manage service levels as an extension of REG customer service
  • Investigate all new opportunities
  • Maintain a proficient/professional level of knowledge of the truck and rail industry

Other frequent duties:

  • Maintain a strong understanding of REG accounting procedures and financial conditions
  • Keep all transportation rates up to date in the rate database
  • Develop and maintain a professional and positive working relationship with internal and external sales force, plant operations, and all customers
  • Recommend and execute process improvements in record keeping, personnel, and procedures
  • As new personnel demands arise for the department, recruit, hire, educate, and coach new employees
  • Participate in industry organizations and functions as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Education Required: 4 year bachelor’s degree – Supply Chain Management, or related business degree

            *MBA preferred

Experience Required:  7-10 years’ experience with transportation logistics management background
