This position is an internally recognized authority in the field of engineering and construction associated with Tailings Storage Facilities, Crushed Leach Facilities, and Water Dams (TCLW) and Levees. The primary purpose associated with this role is management, operational oversight, and minimization of structural risks associated with these facilities while ensuring the efficient design, planning, and execution of work on them. This is accomplished through collaborative efforts with site management, internal and external technical experts, and operational staff. The position operates within a matrix structure with both direct and indirect reports; directing technical functions, outlining program work, guiding strategies for key portfolio initiatives, reviewing work for technical accuracy and adequacy, and setting policy framework for projects and operations within the regional area of responsibility. Decisions and recommendations strongly influence basic operating policy and major program and project expenditures.

OPERATIONAL SUPPORT - PTFI:

  • Interact routinely with site operational engineers, supervisors, division leaders, external engineering firms (Engineer of Record and Design Engineer), of?cials, peers and contractors
  • Serve as Point of Contact on assigned locations on all tailings-related matters
  • Oversee Operations’ tailings management and monitoring/reporting programs to identify cost reduction opportunities, best practices, and reduce risks
  • Offer both strategic advice and tactical guidance for implementing MMB recommendations as well as actively participates in the scheduled MMB reviews
  • Manage detailed engineering for assigned TCLW structures as well as tailings-related engineering studies including those related to hydrology, hydraulics, sediment transport, geotechnical engineering, geochemistry and water quality, and post-closure river diversion
  • Guide or implement (project specific) all aspects of projects including design oversight and management, field and lab investigation coordination, sustainable development process, progress accountability reporting and tracking, with regular communications to stakeholders
    Present updates to FCX executive management and external business partners as needed

OPERATIONAL SUPPORT - General:

  • Work collaboratively with all sites to develop centralized process and personnel resourcing for sustaining capital project planning and cost tracking for tailings storage facilities
  • Coordinate and guide long-range mine planning activities for sustaining capital budgets related to TCLW structures
  • Drive operational support strategies including development of and alignment on long-range Tailings Storage Facility plans for both closure and expansion
  • Participate in the Tailings Stewardship Program by attending site visits and providing critical review of designs and analyses as requested
  • Provide practical execution advice during the Tailings and Crushed Leach Stewardship inspections
  • Offer tactical guidance and assistance with implementing TST and TRB recommendations
  • Provide construction management and planning expertise to North and South America TCLW engineers and operators with respect to ongoing field activities
  • Provide technical expertise on TCLW related studies and designs, as requested

  • Present updates to FCX executive management and external business partners as needed

CAPITAL GROWTH & SUPPORT:

  • Provide technical strategy and expertise to FCX Engineering managers, FCX operations-based engineers, and FCX Environmental managers on TCLW-related project components throughout Scoping, Pre-feasibility, Feasibility Studies and Detailed Designs
  • Provide input and critical review on construction schedules, capital and operating cost estimates for tailings and crushed leach projects
  • Lead and participate in constructability and operability reviews for tailings and crushed leach projects

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Environmental or a related field of Engineering and fifteen (15) years of relevant experience, OR
  • Master’s degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Environmental or a related field of Engineering and thirteen (13) years of relevant experience
  • Thorough understanding of Civil engineering discipline with specialization in TCLW design, construction, management and operation
