Under the direction of the Director of Software Engineering the Engineering Manager will lead one or more full stack software development teams that are responsible for the successful releases of one or more SaaS products. The Engineering Manager ensures the software is developed, tested, and delivered with high quality within the committed timeline, following the Mediware software development life cycle process and adhering to the engineering standards for software development. The Engineering Manager also provides hands-on guidance, coaching, and mentoring of developers as well as sources and manages overall staff to meet capacity needs.  

Principal Functions of the Job:
Business Acumen:

  • Understand and support the product(s) roadmap(s): understand the business value, market strategy, blueprint, overall architecture, performance, and business operations, risks, etc.

  • In support of the product(s) roadmap(s), determine the need for additional staff and/or consultants, obtain approval, and make for the appropriate recruitments if necessary.

  • In support of the product(s) roadmap(s), determine the hardware and 3rd party software needs, obtain approval, and coordinate the vetting and purchase/installation in collaboration with Operations.

  • Understand track and report team progress via OKRs, to ensure alignment to Engineering OKRs and Mediware OKRs

  • Manages technical product costs in support of overall product(s) roadmap(s)


  • Directs and manages product development from design to delivery, following the Mediware Agile methodology and engineering design and coding standards.

  • Provide hands-on technical guidance, mentoring, and leadership. Must be proficient in full stack development including understanding design patterns, data schema patterns, etc.

  • Lead or participate in design efforts, design reviews, and code reviews.

  • Provide assistance to team members as needed to determine and/or resolve system problems.

  • Develop full-scale plans as needed to manage initiatives in support of overall development or manage major enhancements of products. Identify and manage project dependencies, milestones, and overall timeline

  • Proactively manage changes in scope, identify potential crises, and devise contingency plans.

  • Define success criteria and disseminate to involved parties

  • Participate in sprint or release retrospectives; create and document action items, instilling a mindset of continuous improvement


  • Effectively manage and communicate expectations to team members and stakeholders in a timely and clear fashion

  • Develop and deliver progress reports, proposals, design documentation, training, and presentations as needed.

  • Coach, mentor, motivate and supervise team members and contractors, promoting accountability for assigned work. Mentor team members on career growth, mapping career growth needs with Mediware business or engineering needs.

  • Provide recommendations to management concerning issues of programmer productivity and software development management

Job Qualifications:

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • BS in Computer Science or related degree OR a minimum of 5 years of software engineering management experience in lieu of the degree. Master is preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in managing, mentoring, and developing high performing software engineering teams.

  • 7+ years of experience with Linux, Ruby on Rails, PHP and Postgress.  Proficiency in JAVA is also preferred.

  • Documented experience designing and implementing Enterprise Web Applications.

  • Technology background with a familiarity in architectural, object-oriented and software design patterns.

  • Clear and experienced understanding of software development life cycle procedures and processes.

  • Experience in tracking and execution of software releases using Microsoft Project.

  • Ability to interface with customers to document and review requirements and implementation plans.

  • Clear and experienced understanding of Software Quality Assurance process.

  • Excellent leadership, employee development and coaching skills.

  • Excellent communication skills - both oral and written communication.

  • Strong computer skills (MS Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
