Job Description

Location: Carmel, Indiana

As the Manager of Research and Development (R&D), you will lead a team of subject matter and technical experts to address research challenges across MISO's reliability, markets, and planning service lines. You will work with members of the R&D and Markets and Grid Research teams to develop and monitor projects and prototypes, leveraging company-wide project planning processes as appropriate. You will strike a reasonable balance between investing in the longer-term and addressing pressing nearer-term challenges.

Your responsibilities as Manager of Research and Development include:
  • Collaborating with colleagues to establish and maintain processes to evaluate current and anticipated market and grid outcomes
  • Staying current on market trends, technological innovations, and best practices and understand MISO's objectives and priorities in formal strategy and planning processes
  • Partnering with customers and stakeholders to understand current and future needs and the organizational, technological, and regulatory context in which they arise
  • Establishing and refining processes to support and motivate the team and ensure effective outcomes
  • Delivering on high-priority initiatives
  • Ensuring team member goals are aligned with departmental and corporate objectives
  • Coaching, developing, evaluating, and managing team member performance
  • Establishing training and development plans in collaboration with other leaders

To be success as MISO's Manager of Research and Development role, we're looking for the following skills/experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in, Electrical Engineering, Business, Economics, or related field, with at least five (5) years relevant work experience required.
  • Master's degree or Ph.D. (preferred)
  • Proven record of collaborative leadership accomplishments and a passion for leading teams (managing employee performance, coaching and mentoring)
  • Experience in a management role in an applied research setting (e.g., academia, lab, industry research group), ideally undertaking electricity-focused research
  • Some depth of technical experience with anyof the following:
    1. Wholesale electricity market design, implementation, monitoring, settlements, and/or operation
    2. Market clearing engines and electricity pricing
    3. Development or application of computational methods in power systems analysis and operation
    4. Development or application of optimization or machine learning or similar methods
    5. Electric utility resource procurement, electric transmission and/or generation development

Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.
