Summary of Essential Functions

  • Assists enforcing the medical centers policies and procedures for the storage and preparation of pharmaceuticals.
  • Ensures that the pharmacy provides superior services, exceeds all legal, accreditation and certification requirements, and follows all applicable policies, procedures, codes and standards of the medical center.

Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy with a BS Pharmacy degree or higher.
  • An advanced degree (pharmacy or business) is desirable.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

License and Certifications

  • Currently licensed to practice pharmacy in state of Texas. Certification/

Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Must have three to five years hospital training or equivalent training; one to two years in a management position or equivalent training; trained in general use of pharmacy computer systems; and previous clinical experience.
  • Must be able to work independently, handle stress appropriately and work cooperatively with hospital and pharmacy staff.
  • Must be able to set priorities, make critical decisions and respond quickly to emergency requests.
  • Fosters a team environment by providing orientation and training to new team members.
  • Must be able to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, acute care, psychiatric, oncology, obstetric, chemically dependent, rehabilitation and skilled-nursing patients.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the Director of Pharmacy in ensuring safe, appropriate, cost effective drug therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Develops, enforces and maintains policies and procedures that promote cost-effective, appropriate and safe drug use.
  • Develops and maintains a medical staff approved formulary.
  • Supervises drug storage and preparation areas throughout the hospital.
  • Provides for the educational needs of healthcare professionals and patients and their families.
  • Ensures maintenance of an adequate drug supply. Ensures the integrity of the drug supply. Establishes specifications for the procurement of drugs, chemicals and biologicals.
  • Ensures strict control and accountability for drugs dispensed to patients or distributed to floor stock.
  • Assures adequate control and documentation of controlled substances.
  • Supervises pharmacy personnel. Recruits, promotes, disciplines and terminates pharmacy staff.
  • Develops job descriptions and performance standards. Evaluates and counsels staff on their performance.
  • Prepares work schedules and monitors workload statistics. Maintains an appropriate staffing level. Provides for the educational needs of the pharmacy staff.
  • Reviews monthly financialstatistics and plans expenditures within budget guidelines. Monitors and justifies all expenses exceeding budgeted targets.
  • Ensures preparation and submission of patient charges and financialreports to administration in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Administers reports, documents, payroll records, statistical surveys and otherrequired data.
  • Ensures compliance with hospital policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy services. Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal, State and local laws, rules and regulations.
  • Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as necessary.
