Position Description

This is a great opportunity for a paid search expert to lead one of the largest search marketing programs in both the retail and automotive industries.

Over 20years ago CarMax revolutionized the automotive industry. Today CarMax is looking to once again transform our business by developing a world class customer acquisition engine. The Sr. Manager of Paid Search will play an integral role in this important company initiative and have an immediate impact on the way CarMax acquires customers.

CarMax’s paid search program has been described as “incredibly sophisticated,” “highly analytical” and “essential to the business.” We have large budgets and even larger ambitions. We are looking to take our well-established program to the next level and this new role is critical to helping us get there.

As CarMax unveils new products to meet the increasingly digital needs of our shoppers, you will lead the team in both managing a successful, mature program as well as building new programs from scratch. You should be just as comfortable discussing bidding models and automation with data scientists as you are influencing Sr. Executives. You should be energized by performance marketing, growing efficiently and looking for new areas to optimize.

Position Requirements

• Strategy Development:

— Manage CarMax’s paid search program
– Develop and share a vision for the future of paid search
– Partner with others (Marketing Strategy, Product Teams and business leaders) to align traffic acquisition strategies with the goals and objectives of the overall business
– Lead the creation and prioritization of a backlog of projects that that will deliver against performance goals
– Manage a multi-million dollar SEM budget

• Channel Execution & Optimization:

— Identify and activate against opportunities to optimize the program
– Monitor paid search trends and investigate irregularities in performance to identify opportunities for improvement and optimization
– Lead a cross-functional team to implement changes that optimize performance
– Develop testing, e.g., A/B or multivariate tests, for key SEM performance levers such as ad copy and landing pages
– Stay abreast of advances in the paid industry; act as a subject matter expert (SME) to other teams

• Stakeholder management: Identify and activate against opportunities to optimize the program

• Leading through others: Obtain and manage resources to achieve our paid search objectives

– Motivate a cross-functional team to achieve our goals
– Understands what resources are required to achieve our objectives and ensures the team has those resources
– Coordinate the evolution and construction of automation tools to deliver on business goals
– Promote an environment of continuous learning through developing training for other CarMax associates

• Strong problem solving and analysis skills
• Strong communication skills (both written & verbal)
• Ability to apply industry & technical knowledge to company goals
• Extensive experience working closely with SEM Bidding Platforms (Kenshoo, Marin, etc.)
• Proficient knowledge of web analytics platforms (eg. Adobe, Google Analytics)
• Experience managing other performance marketing channels including programmatic, retargeting, social, email, etc.)
• Extreme attention to detail and accuracy
• Experience utilizing agile methods and working within a product organization
• Experience with SQL, Python or related querying language

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

• 4-year college degree
• Graduate degree preferred
• 7+ years of paid search experience including multiple years running a multi-million dollar per month program
