Summary:

The ASPCA is looking for an experienced media relations professional with a passion for animal welfare to serve as a Manager on its Media & Communications Team. The Manager will play an integral role on a collaborative team responsible for sharing the life-saving work and mission of the ASPCA through engagement with media – broadcast, print, online – and other influencers. The Manager will have responsibility for communications and media relations around several key program areas and provide strategic communications assistance on other important initiatives related to our mission. He/she will manage specific objectives and projects related to the successful implementation of the ASPCA’s communications function, with a strong emphasis on creating and implementing integrated communications plans where media outreach is a major element, as well as manage such outreach for projects as assigned by the supervisor. Candidates should be skilled storytellers with experienceworking with consumer and news media, and have experience managing media stories with a proven track record of placements in leading national and NYC-Metro media outlets.

Responsibilities:

Media Relations (70%)

  • Create and implement strategic and integrated communications plans using a wide range of communications tactics to support programmatic and organizational efforts
  • Develop and nurture relationships with external audiences (media, celebrities, third-party constituencies, etc.) to convey the ASPCA’s message
  • Ensure communications outreach is research-based and measurable, using approved techniques that meet the industry standard
  • Develop compelling story ideas and draft well-researched story pitches
  • Engage in proactive media outreach and pitching for assigned program areas that yield high-quality media placements
  • Draft, edit and disseminate communications materials such as press releases, media/photo advisories, calendar listings, public service announcements, articles for newsletter and website, and other materials as required
  • Coordinate specific public relations tasks and/or events with other departments and managing the implementation of these projects as necessary
  • Manage ongoing media relations and outreach, including arranging and covering radio, print, online and television interviews/appearances – some of which may occur in early morning, evening or weekends
  • Represent the ASPCA at events, as required
  • Conduct photography for media and ASPCA events and programs, as required
  • Create/maintain media lists
  • Update and disseminate media monitoring reports
  • Monitor inbound press line inquiries - respond to and/or re-route calls and emails appropriately and in a timely manner

Project Management & Collaboration (20%)

  • Oversee and manage projects from start to completion
  • Schedule meetings, create agendas, take meeting notes and develop actionable next steps to keep projects moving
  • Communicate regularly with program experts to keep up-to-date on programmatic developments and closely track developing stories and optimal times for external communication
  • Liaise and collaborate with colleagues who oversee other channels (i.e. internal, public/professional online properties, social, etc) to maximize relevant communication opportunities
  • Coordinate production and distribution of material with other ASPCA departments as required

Administrative/Other (10%)

  • Participate and contribute updates during Media & Communications departmental meetings and working cross-functionally with other members of the team
  • Format and save program-area media clips in a timely manner
  • Research, participate, and share with the rest of the team professional development/learning opportunities as appropriate
  • Potentially manage staff
  • Other duties, as required and deemed necessary by supervisor

Additional Information:

  • BA, BS or equivalent required; Liberal Arts (English, history, etc.), public relations, journalism or communications major preferred
  • 3-5 years related experience in public relations/media management required (public relations agency experiencepreferred)
  • Experience in consumer PR preferred
  • Proven track record of placements in leading national media (strongly preferred)
  • Experience writing and delivering presentations
  • Must be available after business hours, on holidays and weekends, as required (on rotation)
  • Experience managing others on projects a plus
  • Comfort handling dogs and cats and willingness to engage in basic animal handling training
