Position Summary:
Responsible for owning, identifying, creating and delivering break-through product development, innovation, differentiation and renovation across key Private Brands (PB) portfolio of products working in collaboration with PB Product Managers and Categories. Interpreting and defining business innovation ideas/concepts and leveraging Culinary Center team to bring these concepts to life.
Product Development, Innovation and renovation will align with Global and RBS Sustainability goals. Work with Private Brand Managers and GLB Categories to highlight opportunities for Product development with focus on both innovation and renovation that widens the gap between Private Brands and competitors and increases differentiation.
Identifies novel functional ingredients to increase differentiation through renovation of Private Brand products and leveraging Culinary Center team to bring these concepts to life. Execute guardrails and processes of product development in order to ensure full alignment with brand standards and become famous for Private Brands. Work with the Nutritionists to develop and implement the nutrition strategy for Private Brands. Ensure compliance with nutritional guidelines for the Private Brands portfolio in order to ensure full alignment with brand standards and become famous for Private Brands. Champion Guiding Stars application across products in the Private Brands portfolio.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Product Development & Innovation
Drive for innovation and differentiation to become famous for Private Brands
• Works with Private Brand Managers to implement the category development strategies to strengthen suppliers, quality and innovation for Private Brand’s products in line with required timelines across assigned categories.
• Identifies and implements product portfolio opportunities through innovation and competitor analysis in assigned key categories.
• Develops, executes, and initiates development with vendors, Private Brand Managers and Category teams in assigned category areas.

• Identifies category product development priorities and timetables consistent with the priorities and needs of Private Brands and assesses and manages the balance between work load and available time.
• Manages the integrity of all Private Brands products consistent with the brand definition and strategy. Ensures product lines are appropriate for the designated customer segment.
• Exudes a high degree of credibility and the ability to work with and through all levels of management (including Category Management leadership)

2. Product Improvement and Renovation
Establishes new/existing product development focused on renovation, as a competitive advantage from financial and consumer perspectives.
• Focus on projects to renovate/develop products to meet 2025 Clean label initiative.
• Continually seeks opportunities, in conjunction with suppliers, Private Brand Managers and GLB Category Managers, to drive renovation, reduce overall costs and improve quality of product (as appropriate) in assigned categories.
• Ensures product renovation improves products from at least one aspect; nutrient, ingredient and/or quality perspective without sacrificing their taste.

• Identifies and collaborates with functional ingredient suppliers and manufacturers to bring innovative ingredients to aid renovation efforts and improve Private Brand products. Works with Culinary Center team as relevant.
• Ensures product lines are appropriate for the designated customer segment and in line with PB Brand Equity standards to make us Famous for Private Brands and pass product validation and customer/associate sensory panels.
• Identifies, recommends and executes product formulation improvements working in partnership with suppliers.

• Works to renovate or improve the nutritional content and/or formula of the Private Brands portfolio of products (e.g. sugar, salt reduction, MSG removal, synthetic color replacement) following guidelines.
• Monitors and reports on progress towards Private Brands renovation goals and KPI’s.
• Understands Guiding Stars rating system to deliver products that maintain or increase the Guiding Stars rating through focused renovation and leverages the PB Nutritionist where necessary.
• Drives financial results by providing renovation options that differentiate the brand from other products in the marketplace or equally preferred to national brand items but with higher margins in assigned categories.
• Exudes a high degree of credibility and the ability to work with and through all levels of management (including Category Management leadership).

3. Nutrition Strategy
Supports efforts around Private Brands Nutrition Strategy and supports Global Sustainability nutrition goals
• In collaboration with the PB nutritionist provides input to the nutrition guidelines, strategies and codes of best practice standards for all Private Brands in the areas of nonperishable, fresh and edible nonfoods.
• Maintain awareness of nutrition goals and Guiding Stars program across the Private Brands team and across RBS and Brands as relevant.
• Tracks and reports progress against Private Brands nutrition goals (e.g. salt reduction, sugar reduction, "clean" label). Elevates issues/risks as appropriate.

4. Consumer Insights & Industry Knowledge
Shows relentless effort to understand the customer. Builds expertise in global & local food and consumer trends as well as functional ingredient and non-food trends.
• Responsible for understanding Industry and consumer trends and delivering new and innovative products that meet our customer needs within assigned categories. Staying informed on consumer macro and micro health trends that are impacting the grocery industry.

• Maintain and grow knowledge of niche products, functional ingredients, manufacturer capabilities and competitor products though competitor store visits, Trade Shows, trade and consumer media as well restaurant, food service and consumer shows/events leveraging the culinary center team.
• Identifies unique product attributes and benefits to achieve brand differentiation related to seasonal products, platforms, key business shifts and new product concepts within assigned categories.
• Responsible for gathering, analyzing and interpreting market data and consumer research to identify emerging trends and consumer needs and/or behaviors that provide insights leading to product innovation, renovation and differentiation within assigned categories. Collaborate with Culinary Center Team to align on trend data.
• As the expert, keep Private Brands Managers and GLB categories informed regarding industry and consumer trends as well as relevant renovation and innovation trends through reports and presentations.
• Leads and manages the team feedback, sensory guidance and technical direction between Consumer Insights and the product vendor and or other external technical resources for assigned categories.
• Develops and maintains strong internal and external partnerships. Identifies product portfolio renovation & innovation opportunities through competitor and product analysis.
Requirements Basic Requirements:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and related work experience
Food Science, Biochemistry, Food Technology, Culinology, Nutrition
5+ years of related experience

• Understanding of the private label retail food business environment and metrics
• Culinology experience or combination of Food Science/Culinary arts
• Ability to critically evaluate multiple aspects of consumer products
