A Brief Summary of This Position:

This Manager role is primarily responsible for driving improvement by leading and managing the Field Quality Assurance team involved with identification and resolution efforts as they pertain to Utility product field issues.  It requires a broad understanding of the Utility product, how it is manufactured including inspection requirements for each product feature, and a strong understanding of how the product is to be installed and function. Additionally, this position requires proficiency in three areas of Nondestructive Testing (NDT):  Visual (VT), Magnetic Particle (PT), and Ultrasonic (UT) along with coating application and inspection knowledge.

This position manages a Project Manager ETT, QA Assistant and the Field QA and Senior Field QA Representatives who routinely interact with the customer working directly with the customer’s representatives including third party services who represent the customer (e.g. inspection services, construction management, engineering services, etc.).  As such, this position will be required to demonstrate professionalism at all times, and the ability to work in environments that at times may be somewhat adversarial. To assess and resolve field problems, this position will also work directly with multiple departments within the Valmont Utility group, such as manufacturing sites, customer service managers, project managers, project administrators, account managers, etc.

As with many of the roles within the QA (Quality Assurance) organization, this position may be called upon to support other events, such as internal product and process audits, customer pre-production manufacturing evaluations, technical sales assistance, etc.

Essential Functions:

  • This position reports to the Vice President Quality Assurance and has 12 direct reports
  • This role requires up to 50% travel(internationally/domestically), including overnight stays
  • Coaching and mentoring the Field QA team while promoting a continuous improvement environment
  • Building ‘Quality capability’ across the organization through training, culture development and role modeling
  • Responsibility for managing, leading and directing staff reports and team
  • Manage all people matters relating to the Field QA team developing and supporting as appropriate (motivating, delegating, performance management, appraisals, recruiting and identifying and arranging job related development training)
  • Responsibility for managing and achieving the team budget and all prevailing team KPI’s
  • Develop, maintain and coordinate monthly quality reports with trend analysis to QA upper management
  • Oversee the day-to-day field functions supporting the operation
  • Identify areas where inspection strategies need to be revised
  • Monitor inspection results to ensure product/process quality is maintained identifying where documentation and actual product specifications do not match
  • Manage QA team of 12 involved with field problem identification and resolution
  • Oversee management of third party contractors and/or other Valmont technical support (e.g. welder)
  • Oversee auditing of products and processes in the field and in the manufacturing process
  • Oversee auditing of products delivered to customer sites for conformance to specifications
  • Routinely monitor compliance with customer specifications and Utility work instructions and specifications
  • Conduct business on behalf of the Company in full compliance with the laws of the many jurisdictions in which we operate
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds, although most frequent lift is up to 20 pounds
  • Ability to perform manual labor while in the field, wear all necessary PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), and work in an environment where there is exposure to various weather elements

Other Important Details about the Role:

  • Ability to determine whether or not a perceived quality issue is a result of Utility product and/or service, a customer issue, or a combination of the two
  • Oversee the remedy including performing final inspection if necessary
  • Assist with pre-production visits by the customer and/or their designate
  • Provide assurance to the customer the quality system is in place to ensure their product will be produced correctly
  • Provide on-site support to long-term field projects
  • Participate in internal product and process audits as time permits
  • Assess and determine how the customer issue/concern should be classified, warranty work  i.e. warranty work or other
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing specifications and procedures

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Preferred Bachelor’s degree with 6+ years relevant experience or Associate’s degree with 8+ years of experience or 10+ years of relevant quality experience
  • Ability to travel 25-50% domestically – some international possible
  • Management or supervisory experience
  • Five years of experience in metals fabrication including welding, and two years of experience working in a Quality Control and/or Quality Assurance capacity
  • SNT-TC-1A (American Society of Nondestructive Testing recommended practice number) VT Level II, MT Level II, and UT Level II
  • AWS-CWI (American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector)
  • NACE (National Association of Corrosion Engineers) Level 1
  • Ability to interpret standard U.S. and metric measurements
  • Ability to understand and use industry standard mathematical equations and formulas
  • Ability to write legible reports and summarize findings
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical data
  • Ability to read and interpret blue prints
  • Finished coating specification knowledge
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability
  • Thoughtful communicator; measured in interactions with customers, third party representatives, co-workers, and other Valmont contacts
  • Ability to constructively coach staff/teams and course correct
  • Strong computer skills using MS Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) QMS, IFS, QCAR/CRS
  • Ability to book travel and manage expenses

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Five years of experience working in a Quality Control and/or Quality Assurance group as an inspector
  • Five years of inspection training
  • Five years of non-destructive testing experience
  • NACE Level 2
