The Manager, Equipment Engineering is a key part of the equipment engineer leadership team. The equipment engineering team provides expertise, service, and support to San Diego Illumina headquarters by maintaining equipment at world class levels in a fast-paced regulated environment and providing high level reliability exceeding Illumina's dynamic development and manufacturing demands. The manager will be a subject matter expert with deep experience leading the team to accomplish routine operations, continuous improvement, and projects with energy and enthusiasm. They will work in a dynamic team-oriented environment that supports multiple operations and technologies helping Illumina deliver its highly complex product pipeline in a reliable and sustainable manner.

Responsibilities:


  • Analyze process test results, issue reports and make technical recommendations
  • Balances effective utilization of direct reports within project and functional plans as well as the effectiveness of equipment technical performance
  • Construct and execute controlled experiments (including DOE's) to optimize equipment and quality issues and drive implementation of solutions in a production environment to meet production goals
  • Interface and coordinate with Manufacturing, Engineering, Supply Chain, R&D, Facilities, EHS, Quality, Regulatory, among other departments to ensure maintenance and project activities are on time and meet performance goals
  • Leads teams on the development and deployment of equipment improvements, process improvements, and cost savings as part of the continuous improvement process
  • Lead, work on, and guide teams to transfer equipment between manufacturing locations
  • Maintain staff by recruiting, selecting, training employees and maintaining work instructions; maintain a safe, secure, and legal work environment
  • Manages content knowledge for the equipment engineer team
  • Mentors and coaches proactively to set the team up for success and provide for personal career growth both technically and managerially
  • Other duties may be assigned as determined by Management
  • Provide leadership and direction to the Equipment Engineering team to accomplish all team goals and objectives
  • Refines existing processes to improve department effectiveness.
  • Takes direction regarding budget and resource allocation.
  • Troubleshoot production line issues related to product quality and equipment malfunction, safety, or obsolescence
  • While performing the duties of this job, is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, climb stairs/ladders, kneel, crouch, or wear safety gear. Must regularly lift and / or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

Supervisory Responsibilities:


  • Talent Acquisition activities which include identifying needs of the department, justification for budget to fill positions, coordinating with HR to market the position, review resumes, conduct interviews and identify and recommend a candidate as the potential hire, and employee orientation to the department and company.
  • Talent Development activities which include developing training plans with employees to ensure they have the necessary expertise to successfully perform their jobs, provide ongoing guidance to employees, and career counseling to help employees develop and advance in their careers.

  • At higher levels of management, establishing and distributing budgets among departments is required.

Requirements:


  • Demonstrated ability to accomplish goals while working across departments is required
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead, coach and mentor direct reports required
  • Experience in production support is required
  • Experience with CMMS or CCMS systems required
  • High level problem solving and reasoning skills required
  • Deep experience in large scale DNA synthesizer technology and associated processes.
  • Deep experience with automated liquid handling systems.
  • Highly knowledgeable with fluidic, electrical and mechanical systems
  • Must be a strong communicator, verbal and written, able to effectively lead and influence teams and interface well with the organization
  • Experience in high-volume production in a high-tech consumables industry is desirable
  • Experience working in an ISO13485 or FDA certified environment is desirable
  • Project management skills is desirable
  • Travel up to 15%
  • Working experience in Life Sciences / Pharmaceutical / Medical Devices industries would be an advantage

Experience/Education:


  • AS Degree or equivalent required. Bachelor's, in applicable field or equivalent desired
  • At least 8+ years of direct work experience
  • At least 1+ years of managing engineering/maintenance and/or related operations experience
  • 3+ years of managing experience preferred
