Reporting to the Manager of Husbandry Operations (YARC), the responsibilities of the position include directing a comprehensive and integrated husbandry operations program that supports and protects Yale’s biomedical research enterprise. The Yale Animal Resources Center operates 225,000 sqft of space within 24 buildings.
The overall purpose of the position is to provide leadership and oversight in developing and directing an effective, efficient, innovative, and compliant animal care program within a unit of YARC Operations that responds to and meets Yale’s diverse and dynamic research priorities.
The position requires a broad and contemporary knowledge base in animal-based research methodology and applications, industry specific equipment and technology, specialized animal care requirements, and animal-based regulations. The Manager III is responsible for the training and oversight of supervisory and C&T animal care technicians that perform daily care and housing of multiple, regulated species in several non-contiguous AAALAC accredited facilities. Daily proper care is a critical component of consistently generating quality data and ensuring optimal animal health and well-being. Proper training and oversight of staff using biohazardous, chemical and radiological agents is of the upmost importance in preventing exposures and maintaining biosecurity.
The responsibilities include strategic planning, refining, aligning and overseeing their assigned YARC husbandry operations unit. These responsibilities include cross-functional interactions the Manager of Physical Plant (YARC) and the Manager of Process Standards and Training.
As a member of the senior management staff of YARC Operations, the incumbent’s responsibilities include evaluation, development, and revision of policies and standards for their YARC husbandry operations unit in order to balance operational priorities with competing research, financial, space, and regulatory requirements. This includes continuous monitoring, assessment and modification of unit operations to ensure excellent customer service, cost containment and compliance with federal and state Animal Welfare and Biosafety regulations and voluntary accreditation guidelines. Other significant responsibilities include staff development, quality control, budget development and partnering with Yale University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Environmental Health and safety (EHS) to address safety and compliance issues.
1. Reviews and determines staffing needs, job posting requirements, salary guidelines, and labor agreement interpretations for exempt and non-exempt staff in one or more functional department of the University. 2. Manages the administrative support needs for exempt and nonexempt staff and provides recommendations, improvements, solutions and assistance as needed. 3. Manages and monitors technology needs, conducts inventory, and system requirements for the assigned departments. 4. Develops and prepares budgets, financial forecasts, and financial analyses and the actual vs. budgeted performance reports for the departments. 5. Manages the use of facilities in one or more departments including office space, work stations, equipment, and office supplies. 6. Manages administrative support for activities of one or more departments to ensure timely completion of projects. 7. Manages and coordinates training sessions for assigned departments when new policies or practices are adopted. 8. Ensures compliance with University and federal regulations as they apply to the assigned departments. 9. Identifies, plans, and develops administrative policies for the assigned departments. 10. Assists in reviewing and implements University and departmental policies as they pertain to the administrative functions of the assigned department. 11. Assesses and makes recommendations regarding staff development and staffing levels. 12. Monitors, develops, plans, and executes systematic research on user requirements through such mechanisms as surveys, interviews, focus groups and competitive analysis. 13. Manages a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees. 14. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in related field and 5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Bachelor’s degree in Laboratory Animal Science.
Preferred Licenses or Certifications:
Advanced certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science. Lean Six Sigma Certification.
