Job Description

The Boeing Company is currently seeking a Lead Software Engineer, SSEE Family of Systems to support its Fairfax, Virginia location.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Non-recurring duties:

  • Work with I&T lead to understand and document SW development to I&T handoff process as it exists today and create an improvement plan
  • Define what is accomplished during the various phases of SW development lead up to handoff to I&T. What are entrance and exit criteria at each phase
  • Understand current staff RAAs and create an improvement plan (Work with I&T lead to define role of I&T team, work with SW managers to define the role of the SW team. What are the right roles; who fulfills each role)
  • Understand dividing point between software development and I&T (when does handoff occur, what are gates, transition points, etc)
  • Train staff on their defined roles and responsibilities

Soft skills items:

  • Become integral to SW development and I&T teams to understand dynamic
  • Work with the engineering managers to create and execute BG&O’s, personnel improvement plan, etc as required

Recurring functions

  • Train and enforce all newly developed processes
  • Chief architect for SSEE FoS software: Responsible for defining, refining, and evolving SW architecture
  • Responsible for success of I&T and SW development teams
  • Program liaison to software development matrix

Responsible for coordinating with software managers to:

  • Assign staff to SSEE FoS efforts
  • Ensure software staff complies with SOW requirements
  • Ensure staff meets schedule/budget for development effort
  • Responsible for relaying customer messaging to SW managers and staff
  • Working with SW middle management to deconflict corporate priorities
  • Responsible for keeping Chief Eng and SW PM informed of customer interactions
  • Treat the SSEE family of systems as a single system.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining a software roadmap for the SSEE FoS based on internal and external inputs
  • Technical lead for any software proposal requiring SW and I&T input
  • Work with I&T lead to produce I&T content, BOE’s, schedules, assumption
  • Work with SW managers to develop SW content, BOE’s, schedules
  • Maintain historical metrics: record of cost per function and difficulty of efforts
  • Responsible for SW/I&T technical discussions during negotiations
  • Educate execution team on scope of work after award
  • Responsible for executing award within bid budget and schedule
  • Responsible for flawlessly transitioning SW bid to execution team
  • Responsible for identifying staffing needs across all SW and I&T effort
  • Raising SW developer needs to SW managers and making hiring recommendations
  • Raising I&T staffing needs to the program engineering manager and making hiring recommendations
  • Participating in interview panels
  • Responsible to work with SW mgr and I&T lead to assign staff to tasking
  • Responsible for providing BG&O and year-end performance feedback for SW staff that is support the program; identify staff growth opportunities
  • Responsible for working with I&T lead to provide BG&O and year-end performance feedback for the I&T staff supporting the program
  • Responsible for owning the SW IMS and fully understanding critical dependencies within and between delivery orders
  • Understand all ongoing and upcoming SW development tasking and I&T tasking
  • Maintain thorough understanding of SOW scope of work
  • Advise PM when scope of work has deviated from contract, either through SW or I&T team desires or customer desires or other If we agree to deviate from contract, ensure proper agreements are in place

CAM duties:

  • Solely responsible for executing SW development duties according to schedule and budget on the program, and understanding I&T duties executed by I&T lead
  • Responsible for understanding SW and I&T CDRLs on the job and working with SW team and I&T team to prepare/deliver all CDRLs
  • Identify and manage risks for SW activities. Keep awareness of risks managed by I&T lead
  • Define the division of duties between the SW lead and the I&T lead
  • Responsible flowing down direction from the Chief Engineer to the SW and I&T teams
  • Responsible for keeping the Chief Engineer apprised of SW and I&T status
  • Responsible for interacting with IT infrastructure teams and DevOps teams to ensure all infrastructurerequired for program execution is available, reliable, and current
  • Support CapEx plans as required to keep hardware current and available
  • Develop roadmaps of future IT and DevOps capabilities
  • Primary customer interface for SW activities, and keeping awareness of I&T lead interactions with customer – activities such as TRB, ad hoc questions, schedule planning, etc
  • Understand the interaction and dependencies between all ongoing and upcoming work to identify potential schedule slips early
  • Work with PM to generate contracts letters when external dependencies drive schedule
  • Work with I&T lead and SW Managers to identify, assign, and manage resources for successful job execution (people, test equipment, lab space, GFE, systems)

Innovate:

  • Work with software development teams to build in automated test features to enable rapid software testing and release without need to perform 9 month long FAT
  • Work with SW development teams to build IA validation into the software baseline so we don’t have lengthy certification after release
  • Work with I&T lead to seek approaches to accelerate FAT testing and reduce dependency on expensive hardware to execute test events and I&T.
  • Identify ways to effectively disseminate information to new team members to reduce training time
  • Identify ways to use the future common core architecture to secure our position as the leader going into spectral rather than allowing the architecture to dilute our contribution in spectral.

Qualifications

Typical Education/Experience:

Degree and typical experience in engineering classification: Bachelor's 14 or more years' experience, Master's with 12 or more years' experience or PhD with 9 or more years' experience. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

 

Basic Qualifications (Required):

  • This position requires an active Top Secret/SSBI US Security Clearance. (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active.)

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with three or more of the following technologies:
    Linux administration, Windows administration, C, C++, Python, Java, Amazon Web Services, Atlassian tool suite, VMWare, Agile Software Development
  • Experience with Jenkins continuous integration/build
  • Experience with staff size estimation
  • Experience with staff size estimation
  • Experience with proposal development: writing tech volume, developing Basis of Estimate, schedule development
  • Experience leading customer interaction and setting customer expectations
  • Experience with cost account management and executing within schedule and budget limitations
  • Experience optimizing software build and integration processes
  • Experience designing test strategies, optimizing test approach, minimizing testbed cost without sacrificing test quality
