PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Lead Manager – Investment Tax manages the operating responsibilities of a group of investment products or functional areas with primary responsibility for achieving department standards for quality and efficiency. Primary objectives of the group include the preparation of tax provisions, dividend computations, financial statement tax disclosures, the computation of certain complex book tax adjusting entries, and monitoring the performance of mutual fund tax qualification tests performed by various departments.
1. Mutual fund dividend and tax reporting – manage one or more tax managers, accountants or supervisors involved in tax analysis and processing for an area of high complexity and high exposure such as estimating and declaring dividends, the preparation of tax provisions, computing or reviewing highly complex book/tax adjustments or computing highly complex tax information amounts sent to shareholders with 1099-DIV forms; may direct others responsible for reviewing and filing tax returns. The incumbent is actively involved in strategic planning for the tax operating group and participates in group goal setting and standards. The incumbent will be expected to independently assess operating performance, initiate changes in processes and procedures and assess resource needs. The incumbent must possess the technical tax and accounting knowledge and relevant business experience to take primary responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of critical dividend computations. Incumbent is authorized to independently direct the activities of tax specialists in the Fund Accounting group who prepare many of the underlying calculations and influence the affected managers to maintain adequate systems and controls to produce reliable information.
2. Tax Research -- Research and apply tax rules related to mutual funds, other investment products and securities transactions in intermediate areas and complex areas. Has working knowledge of tax rules underlying areas of involvement. Interfaces with research staff as necessary and can plan and implement research findings. Incumbent will independently translate complex tax analyses into workable operational and processing systems.
3. Tax Consulting – Independently organizes and conducts training of Fund Accounting personnel who summarize accounting information for tax purposes. Advises staff and managers on the relevant tax rules and changes in legislation. Initiate and lead multi-department projects to implement or enhance the quality or cost of providing tax services to the T. Rowe Price Funds. Such projects include developing procedures and controls for the tax accounting for a highly complex new security type such as a contingent payment debt instruments or to enhance large excel based programs to perform complex tax computations.
