A week in the life of an Lead Electronics Engineer:
- Will lead a team of engineers, technicians, and other technical members around the globe.
- Perform exploitation and reverse-engineering on IED electronic circuit boards at the operational and strategic levels (Level II and Level III of exploitation).
- Responsible for reporting and briefing critical finds to both military and DoD civilian leadership.
- Identify, capture, analyze and characterize electronic devices and components from IED circuit boards for arming, firing and source characteristics.
- Capture, characterize and identify IED electrical/electronic RF receiver and transmitter modules and circuit board characteristics, operating frequencies and power.
- Analyze recovered electronic components including switching circuits and power sources.
- Identify electronic IED components visually, conduct research and provide information, develop accurate schematics of devices and develop tools and techniques for generating schematics.
- Analyze, demodulate and decode signals in order to extract intelligence data and develop standardized demodulation and decoding tools and techniques for commonly encountered signals.
- Perform Electronic Data Recovery (EDR) of logical and physical data on cell phones and other media storage devices using hardware/software tools including Cellebrite UFED, XRY, FTK, Encase, Chip-off and JTAG tools and analyze EDR files to recover data that may be of investigative or intelligence value.
- Support development of countermeasures for electronic devices/signals.
- Provide information to assist in profiling and signature analysis.
- Produce storyboards and technical reports on captured data.
- Maintain and document chain of custody of items and data.
- Train replacement personnel on SOP.
Job Requirements
- Physical ability and commitment to deploy globally as a Combined Exploitation Cells (CEXC) team member.
- Ability to possess/handle firearms in support of CEXC operations.
- Familiarity with Asymmetric Threat and Tactical Analysis Case Book (ATTAC), WTI Exploitation and Analysis Tool (WEAT), WTI Lexicon, SIPRNET and Community of Interest databases and portals.
- Intimate familiarity with lab processes and work flow for level II exploitation efforts.
- Familiarity with Universal profiling and schema.
- Familiarity with currency of global IED device and Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTP) threat.
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) degree or an applicable technical field from an accredited college or university with 7-15 years of professional work experience in a relevant technical field. Experience must include electronic circuit design and PCB assembly, Radio Frequency (RF) field, operation of lab instrumentations including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, power supplies, communication receivers, RF signal generators and handheld digital multi-meters, CAD applications include Multi SIM and Eagle Professional.
- Experience in (C++, Assembly, Basic and LabVIEW) programming languages are desirable.
- Experience working with a CEXC, WTI, counter-improvised explosive device (C-IED) Team, DTK Lab, Joint Expeditionary Forensics Facility (JEFF), Terrorists Explosive Device Analytical Center (TEDAC) facility, other NGIC, Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) or Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) Lab; interagency, or state/ local law enforcement lab.
- Experience developing and supporting the Weapons Technical Intelligence Enterprise.
- Experience in forensic electronics for military/civilian law enforcement.
- Prior U.S. Military or civilian experience working in explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) or CIED.
- Current DOD Secret security clearance with the ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance.
