Job Summary:

The Lead Application Architect ensures the integrity, security, availability, effectiveness, and efficiency of WDAT supported applications. The Lead Application Architect creates and maintains the baseline and target application architecture model and develops the IT roadmap for applications. The Lead Application Architect also administers application-specific standards and provides design recommendations based on long-term organization strategy. The Lead Application Architect develops application and custom integration solutions, including major enhancements and interfaces, functions, and features.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads, consults, or oversees multiple application architecture engagements.
  • Defines and develops the application architectural strategy, aligned with business goals.
  • Defines development guidelines and standards to be utilized in application development and integration.
  • Designs, and develops a roadmap and implementation plan based upon a current vs. desired future state in application architecture.
  • Analyzes the current IT ecosystem application architecture to identify weaknesses and develop opportunities for improvements.
  • Defines transition steps and strategy from the current to the future application architecture.
  • Develops methods to integrate systems that interact and extend across functional lines.
  • Identifies system requirements for large, complex, ecosystem-wide applications.
  • Reviews requirements across multiple applications and develops application models that span applications and domains.
  • Manages an application governance process: develops, communicates, and ensures adherence to architecture processes, principles, policies, and standards.
  • Researches best practices, business processes, and procedures.
  • May oversee or lead the evaluation and selection process for application packages.
  • Researches, recommends, and applies the user of middleware to facilitate the portability and scalability of applications.
  • Gathers and analyzes data and develops application architecture requirements at a project or program level, aligning architectural requirements with IT strategy.
  • Assesses near-term needs to establish business priorities.

  • Consults with project teams to ensure compatibility with existing solutions, infrastructure, and services.
  • Provides insight and manages risk.
  • Analyzes the current environment to detect critical deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvement.
  • Works with external suppliers to ensure that the appropriate technology direction is set with respect to applications.
  • Identifies and assesses new and emerging technologies and promotes awareness.
  • Performs ongoing architecture quality review activities for specific projects/programs.

  • Keeps current on industry trends to assist in project development and support activities.
  • Provides strategic consultation to business and IT teams and advises on options, risks, costs versus benefits, system impacts, and technology priorities for applications

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10 to 15 years of relevant IT work experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of architecture, application design, system engineering, and integration.
  • Experience writing technical specifications and technical documentation.
  • Experience interpreting an extensive variety of technical instructions in written or diagram form and dealing with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Experience with multiple diverse technologies and environments.
  • Broad knowledge of industry standard best practices.
  • Has general knowledge and demonstrates understanding of the entire WDAT application landscape.
  • Extensive knowledge of architecture frameworks and tools.
  • Research and analysis experience designing new architecture frameworks or enhancing existing architectures.
  • Troubleshooting skills, the ability to determine issue impact, the ability to resolve complex issues, and the ability to consistently exercise sound judgment and initiative in stressful situations.
  • Working knowledge of major components of .NET, Java, XML, C++.

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or similar field or related work experience.
