Responsibilities

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

We are looking for a Launch Systems Engineer or Sr. Launch Systems Engineer that is motivated to create an environment of innovation and success! In this position you will develop new methods for rapidly developing mission options and apply tailored mission assurance principles to leading edge missions in support of the Office of Space Launch (OSL). As a Launch Systems Engineer (LSE) or Sr. Launch Systems Engineer (SLSE) you will consult on small launch missions that directly support the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).
 

KEY FUNCTIONS

  • Design mission options for the OSL customers and partner with them to get satellites into space
  • Develop innovative strategies for tailoring mission assurance principles for small class missions
  • Partner with mission engineers to apply cross program lessons learned to OSL small launch activities
  • Educate the customer on the technical progress of small launch systems managed by companies such as Rocket Labs, Virgin Orbit and Orbital ATK
  • Perform mission design trades, develop mission integration strategies and tailor mission assurance requirements for small launch missions
  • Represent Aerospace initiatives and capabilities to the OSL and other Aerospace organizations
  • Participate in and/or host small satellite workshops and rideshare forums
  • Coordinate Aerospace ETG resources in special studies for small launch missions
  • Present positions on issues and focus topics identified by the customer and other stakeholders


The LSE/SLSE will need to develop effective relationships with multiple launch service contractors, advanced technology personnel, satellite program offices, government mission managers, Aerospace engineers and other support contractor personnel. The LSE/SLSE will also need to make sound technical recommendations for the customer based on facts and data, in some cases on aggressive timelines and with limited detailed information. Expand your horizons with travel up to 1-2 times per month to various contractor facilities, government facilities and launch sites. Home base for this position is Chantilly, VA. 

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Launch Systems Engineer

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field
  • Minimum of 8 years engineering and/or space launch experience 
  • Current and active TS/SSBI 
  • This position requires the ability to maintain a security clearance which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

 

Senior Launch Systems Engineer

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field. 
  • Minimum of 12 years engineering and/or space launch experience 
  • Current and active TS/SSBI 
  • This position requires the ability to maintain a security clearance which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Launch Systems Engineer

  • Proactive work ethic with strong interpersonal skills and an ability to achieve results through influence rather than direction
  • Knowledge of launch vehicle systems, mission design analysis and/or launch base operations 
  • Ability to perform mission design trades, develop mission integration strategies and/or tailor mission assurance requirements for launch missions
  • Ability to effectively communicate and present to a broad range of customers, launch service contractors and other government support contractors while maintaining high standards of data protection 
  • Ability to coordinate diversely skilled engineers to provide guidance and recommendations to the customer on technical challenges pertaining to launch systems and launch integration


Senior Launch Systems Engineer

  • Proactive work ethic with strong interpersonal skills and an ability to achieve results through influence rather than direction
  • Understanding of launch vehicle systems, mission design analysis and launch base operations 
  • Direct experience performing mission design trades, developing mission integration strategies and tailoring mission assurance requirements for launch missions
  • Experience in communicating and presenting to a broad range of customers, launch service contractors and other government support contractors while maintaining high standards of data protection
  • Ability to lead/coordinate teams comprised of diversely skilled engineers to provide guidance and recommendations to the customer on technical challenges pertaining to launch systems and launch integration


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Both Positions

  • Direct experience with launch vehicles and preferably with non-EELV small launch systems, emerging launch systems and/or small satellite launch capabilities 
  • Experience tailoring traditional engineering standards applied to part selection, integration and test for NRO programs and/or other National Security Space missions 
  • Experience coordinating with Aerospace Engineering Technology Group (ETG) organizations in order to quickly identify appropriate resources and provide quality assessments to fulfill customer needs
