Responsibilities

Provide technical leadership within the LSM Engineering group with the ability to work individually and in a team lead role. Complete project assignments to schedule in a multi-project environment.

Produce detailed designs of lasers, laser optics, optical fibers, optical fiber couplings, optical sensors, laser diode modules, and multi-laser light engines from UV to NIR in Zemax.

With mechanical and electrical engineers, develop sub-micron precision optical assemblies, assembly methods and test/metrology procedures for new products.

Build prototypes and conduct laboratory testing of laser diodes, laser modules, and multi-laser systems to project milestones.

Design beam shaping and line generation optics with Zemax.

Support the transfer of new products to manufacturing.

Work with marketing, sales & customers to develop product concepts, system performance targets and specifications and to support system integration.

Stay current with market and technology developments including market trends, competitive products and research in bio-instrumentation and related photonics.

Education and Work Experience:

M.S. or Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Applied Physics or a related discipline with three years of applicable product development experience.


History of customer care, product innovation and successfully delivering projects on time and on budget while meeting defined specifications.

Experience in the following areas:

  1. Optical system design of commercial laser products, both free space and fiber coupled.
  2. Design of micro-optics assemblies requiring passive and active alignment.
  3. Optical system alignment and build process development.
  4. Using geometric and physical optics in Optics Studio (Zemax) to design optical systems.
  5. Validation testing of optical system designs at the optical bench, prototype and product stages.
  6. Experience with optical adhesives and adhesive bonding methods.

Working knowledge of laser safety.


Working knowledge of SolidWorks and Labview is a plus.
