Ciena Corporation is a global networking leader holding #1 market position in our field. At our R&D headquarters in Ottawa we develop intelligent software for customers such as Facebook, Google and Apple as well as telecommunications giants such as AT&T, Verizon and Bell Canada.

The MCP platform team builds and supports backend services used by many application teams. We leverage open source where we can, extending and contributing when needed. Our mandate is to enable application teams to focus on the business logic by giving them a solid platform on which to build their value-add software. We have a passion for learning new technologies and trying new approaches to solving problems.

Responsibilities

As a platform developer you will

  • become a subject matter expert on critical components such as database, scheduling, monitoring, messaging, metrics, logging
  • understand distributed systems inside and out and know how to design robust systems that support high availability, Backup and Restore, Online upgrades and Geo Redundancy.
  • work directly product owners to understand the platform requirements and customer needs.
  • socialize your designs for review, while participating in reviews of other designs.
  • implement solutions using programming languages that are best suited to the task.
  • automate unit and integration tests.
  • support designers who build on platform services.

As a platform designer you will be required to work with:

Technologies: Cassandra, Kafka, Zookeeper, Elasticsearch, Load Balancers, Heroic

Environment: Git, Slack, JIRA, Confluence, Docker, Teamcity, Linux

Languages: Java, GO, Python

General Activities

Ciena Blue Planet division creates software to help design and operate networks. We work with innovative network operators who are using software to improve their customer's experience and lower costs. Ciena Blue Planet software products utilizes a micro service architecture to enable scale both at implementation and run time. Our micro services are built using the best technologies for the job. We automate our tests, so we can iterate frequently and ship with confidence.

Experience

  • BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or related discipline
  • Knowledge of web-scale architectures and technologies (i.e. Cassandra, Kafka, Elasticsearch)
  • Experience with REST API development
  • Experience with micro services using Docker or similar container technology
  • Experience with distributed systems that support HA or GEO Redundancy
  • Strong concurrency and analysis/debugging skills
  • Passion for continuous improvement and innovation
  • Familiarity with testing methodologies such as Junit or similar
  • Familiarity with Agile Scrum, Agile JIRA or Kanban
  • 2-5 years of experience developing systems which are scalable and highly available
  • Enthusiasm, self-starter, & proactive approach

  • Strong verbal & written communication skills
  • Strong sense of responsibility for quality and timely completion of assigned tasks
