Job Description

The IT Systems Engineer oversees and coordinates the work activities of the IT systems teams which encompasses supporting users, managing escalated tickets, patching servers and workstations, supporting the core server farm, application support, capacity planning and management, managing shared storage, supporting virtual and physical servers in all locations, and managing severity 1 outages. This position will be located at either our Great Falls, Denver, Seattle or Orange County office.

Experience and Skills


* Four-year college degree and/or significant related work experience

* Excellent communication skills, both oral and written; ability to communicate technical directions, both in person and over the phone; ability to diagram complex architecture and or experience with Microsoft Visio is recommended

* Excellent customer service skills; ability to work successfully with a variety of personalities and various management levels

* Ability to safely lift and carry as much as 50 pounds

* Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment

* Highly self-motivated and self-directed

* Organized and detail oriented

* Ability to travel as needed

* Follow policies and procedures; maintain client confidentiality

* Communicate in a clear and service oriented manner; use appropriate, professional language and grammar to effectively exchange ideas and information

* Ability to proactively work with both external and internal clients; relate with others in a professional manner in order to accomplish work responsibilities and objectives

* Ability to maintain regular, predictable attendance


* VMware vSphere experience 6.0x required (VCP-DCV certification preferred)

* MS Applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel and Visio required

* Virtualized Infrastructure Administration and architecture experience required

* Microsoft Exchange Administration experience preferred

* Cloud technology management and administration experience required

* Familiarity with automation \ management tools (Puppet, Asible, Chef, etc.) a plus

* Knowledge of software such as Terraform, Packer etc. and DevOps methodologies a plus

* Powershell scripting \ BASH experience required

* Advanced IT Systems technical knowledge and skills that encompasses: VMware, SAN storage and administration, blade servers, rack servers, application support, Windows server, Linux. system patching, desktop performance and Windows technical troubleshooting skills, data center management and LAN\WAN switching

* Familiarity with TCP/IP, network protocols and switch configuration

Advanced knowledge of storage technologies such as SAN. NAS, ISCSI, and FCoE

* Excellent problem solving and analytical skills

* Experience with and management of server operating systems such as Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016 and 2019 required

* SQL Database experience administration or general knowledge a plus

* Python scripting knowledge a plus


* Supervise work activities to ensure work is completed in an accurate and timely manner to include:

* Receiving telephone calls from users having problems using computer software and hardware or inquiring how to use specific software

* Talking to end-users to learn procedures followed and source or error

* Answering questions, applying knowledge of computer software, hardware and procedures to resolve problems

* Determining the cause of problems and following through to resolution

* Communicating with co-works to research problems and find a resolution

* Communication with local Branch management to ensure successful execution

* Support day-to-day IT Operations

* Manage and oversee server and desktop patching

* Closely follow IT Standards and Operating Procedures

* Managed IT backups and ensure data is protected and recoverable

* Work to mature and further develop IT standards

* Respond and ensure the system team responds with urgency to Severity 1 and Severity 2 issues/tickets

* Assist in testing software and hardware to evaluate ease of use and whether product will aid in improving end user experience

* Talking to end-users to learn procedures followed and source or error

* IT Systems Planning and Architecture

* Manage IT Capacity

* Design and architect virtual server environment, network and shared storage topology as well as Cloud architecture

* Plan for growth and design highly available system and application deployments

* Manage Active Directory which may include DHCP, DNS, Group Policy

* Manage critical Infrastructure applications like MS Exchange

* Assist in the management of IT Budget, IT Projects, and Business Expectations

* Research new technology options and look for cost saving opportunities

* In conjunction with business and department priorities and directives, conduct vendor and product research on software and systems products to address business needs

* Lead, coordinate and participate in process improvements as they relate to the client/server environment

* Directly support D.A. Davidson business life cycle and assets, which might include but not limited to patching, imaging, upgrading, deploying, end user training and application\server performance monitoring and capacity planning

* Recommend, propose and execute additions and/or modifications to server environment in order to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance

* Communicate and Manage software and hardware vendors to request service regarding system, application, and hardware support. .

* Research new technology by reading white papers, forums, tech news sites and attend conferences and IT trade shows to remain current on all aspects related to Data center and IT Systems activities. Identify what would be helpful/applicable to IT Systems staff. Communicate relevant information to management and make recommendations regarding necessary changes to keep company current. Train IT Systems Personnel regarding the new information as necessary.

* Work with other technology team members to pass on issues and recommend changes.

* Update operations manuals and support documentation to ensure staff is current on policies and procedures.

* Assist in the management and support of any information technology related projects, assets, procedures or applications

* Perform any other duties as assigned.
