Systems engineers must maintain depth and breadth of technical knowledge in key systems and services that Driscoll’s requires. Some examples, illustrative of the type of technologies in use, are included here. This is meant to be a sample only. Additionally, the systems engineer will be responsible for any new devices, technologies, configurations, or methodologies that the company may require. This includes server platforms, cloud environments, containers, operating systems, storage arrays, backup solutions, directory services, and more. The systems engineer is expected to be at the forefront of technical knowledge for the organization, capable of implementing all infrastructure systems and integrating new technologies, methods, and practices into the existing environment.

Systems engineers also have responsibility to implement and maintain infrastructure in a secure and reliable manner. System security, reliability, and redundancy are critical to the success of the business and should be given a high priority by the systems engineer.

Systems engineers should help to identify the knowledge and competency level of all staff in the IT organization and encourage the development and training of others. The systems engineer should lead and offer learning activities for the staff as well as pursuing their own education and development.

The systems engineer is expected to be a self-motivated employee, capable of making appropriate decisions, communicating with all stakeholders, and working within a collaborative team environment. The systems engineer will be required to develop design documents, configuration templates, and research best practices for implementation and management of all systems.

The systems engineer also has responsibility for analyzing the performance and stability of all systems. As part of this responsibility, the systems engineer will periodically review statistics, trouble reports, and other indicators of system performance to ensure that all systems are operating at the highest possible level of performance, reliability, and security.

All IT employees, but particularly those at the engineering level, are expected to maintain excellent relationships with their co-workers and business partners. All IT employees are ambassadors of the department and should set a high standard of conduct and performance.

The systems engineer will frequently be drawn into discussions, troubleshooting, and work that isn’t specifically listed in this job description. They must maintain the flexibility, focus, and dedication to complete their assigned work, while managing their workload. All employees should take responsibility and work with their manager to maintain good work and life balance, including time for vacations, training, and personal growth and development.
