Position Description:

Academic Fellowship in Primary Care and Community-Engaged Research in the Epidemiology Division at the Medical College of Wisconsin

Positions are available for those pursuing a career in biomedical and/or behavioral health research related to primary care, and interested in pursuing an intensive faculty development experience that will prepare you as an academic leader in epidemiology, to ensure access to high quality, innovative primary care research, reduce health disparities and promote community wellness.

Focus of pursuits:

• Health promotion, prevention and population health; early detection, treatment and management of acute, episodic, chronic and multiple chronic diseases; early detection, treatment, and management of behavioral health disorders including Opioid Use Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, primary and secondary trauma witnessing of violence.

Our 2-year full-time fellowship will prepare you for a successful faculty career, emphasizing:

• Epidemiologic Research on primary care conditions and processes to improve health equity and patient outcomes
• Educational design, teaching and evaluation
• Community-engagement and partnership
• Academic leadership

By collaborating with a rich network of community partners, fellows address social health determinants of health and underlying cultural, linguistic and systems barriers that contribute to primary care sensitive conditions and health disparities. Our nationally recognized faculty provide educational training to complement research experience. Fellows benefit from collaborations with other primary care physicians, clinicians, pharmacists, epidemiologists and social scientists with expertise in epidemiology, mixed methods, geospatial analysis, community engagement, pediatric research, substance misuse and chronic disease self-management. Teaching experiences, research training and mentorship teams are individualized to meet unique needs and interests of each fellow.

Fellows hold a faculty appointment at the rank of Instructor, and receive:

• A competitive stipend and benefits
• Masters degree tuition (if needed)
• Project and travel funds
• Support of a network of productive faculty and peers.

The Academic Fellowship is funded through an Institutional National Research Service Award from the Health Resources and Services Administration and hosting departments. The Medical College of Wisconsin is part of a major Academic Medical Center that includes Froedtert Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, with strong affiliations with the Zablocki VA Medical Center and four community-based hospitals that sponsor our family medicine residencies.

Minimum requirements include a PhD in a relevant field (public health, epidemiology, nursing, social science, biostatistics); AND a commitment to a career in primary care research. Fellows must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Spanish speakers and individuals from minority groups underrepresented in academic medicine are strongly encouraged to apply.
