Position: Innovation Scientist, Animal Health & Nutrition

The main purpose of this role is to lead a market-driven research program that delivers innovative solutions to improve the health and performance of mono-gastric animals, in close collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams.

Location: Leiden, The Netherlands OR Wilmington, DE, USA

Key responsibilities and tasks:

  • Leads research in poultry and swine health, with the aim of developing bio-active solutions to improve animal health and performance
  • Provides in-depth knowledge of animal disease, intestinal health, and/or immunology to R&D and technical teams working in the area
  • Shows creative and original thinking in developing innovative solutions for the animal production industry
  • Manages internal and external resources to meet the goals of Innovation projects
  • Designs and coordinates studies with partners and internal R&D teams, and actively seeks to enhance the technical know-how of Danisco Animal Nutrition in the area
  • Prepares protocols, analyses data, and produces reports on experiments
  • Maintains accurate records for each research project - financial, protocols, and contracts
  • Contributes as a scientist in business opportunity and market assessments in collaboration with Marketing
  • Maintains an up to date awareness of all R&D activities in the sector through literature review and industry and academic networking
  • Writes scientific papers
  • Presents scientific work cogently at internal and external meetings
  • Undertakes a limited amount of travelling world-wide
  • Performs Key Account support activities as agreed from time to time

Job Qualifications

 Key requirements:

  • Degreequalification in Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, or related subject
  • PhD with emphasis on intestinal disease mechanisms or intestinal health in swine or poultry
  • Relevant research experience in at least one of the following fields: immunology, intestinal microbial ecology, host-pathogen interactions
  • First-hand experience with current laboratory techniques of intestinal health and immunology is required
  • Field experience in disease prevention and management in commercial poultry and swine operations is an advantage
  • Relevant post-doctoral or technical/commercial experiencebefore or after PhD is preferred
  • Working level of statistics and use of statistical packages
  • Sufficient IT skills
