Job Description

Stem creates innovative technology services that transform the way energy is distributed and consumed. We create automated, price-responsive systems that enable C&I customers to predict and control electricity costs and capture savings in a rapidly-evolving utility landscape. The Stem system combines predictive analytics and advanced energy storage with a high-fidelity software user interface. By buffering spikes in energy usage, Stem also reduces the impact of the C&I customer on the utility grid and enables better grid citizenship. Through innovation in technology and financing, our goal is to optimize the relationships between energy providers and consumers.

You have strong roots in the academic world (PhD), but have demonstrable experience in applying data science techniques to solve hard business problems in the energy space. You know how to effectively collaborate with business executives to strategize on a data science vision, have experience in leading and mentoring talented data scientists to deliver new capabilities. In addition, while you do not need to be an expert on software development, you should have extensive experience leading development of production level code and understand software best practices.

The data science team is central to the Stem mission. The team consists of experts in the fields of optimization, energy systems, and machine learning using big data. We experiment, we develop and deliver new capabilities for both cloud and IoT devices, work on ad hoc policy analyses, and support operational teams across the organization.

What will your job look like?

As the Head of Data Science at Stem, you are engaged in multiple ways:

Leadership – You will lead a team of talented data scientists and carry the responsibility for the team’s activities and deliverables. You will also play a mentorship role for the data scientists, guiding and advising them in their, experimentation work, review code, help with modeling work and help scope the work along with Product Managers to deliver new capabilities.

Vision – You will explore data science strategies to help Stem deliver on the promise of ever improving performance of its energy storage network, and have a keen eye for using data and analytics to evaluate the impact of new policies on energy storage. You will be collaborating with executives to decide on the best strategy that aligns with the company’s mission and business goals.

Communication – The role of data science is critical to the success of Stem. You will drive the education throughout the business by clearly articulating the vision and activities of the data science team. But your role will extend beyond educating other Stem’ers; you will be expected to speak or write about Stem’s data science vision to our business partners, customers and at social networking events.

Collaboration – In your role you will interact with many departments at Stem but most frequently collaborate with other product development teams. You will be working closely with the CTO, heads of software development, product managers and architects on the planning and delivery of new data science capabilities.

While doing so, you help:

Create virtual power plants comprising of distributed energy storage, that help stabilize the electricity grid, take advantage of different energy related value streams and deliver concrete environmental, economic and social value to our customers.

Required Skills

Data Science

  • Hands on experience with time series analysis and forecasting algorithms (both classical and Machine Learning based)
  • You are familiar with linear/convex optimization and solving such optimization problems with Python or commercial modelers/solvers
  • Experience using Neural Networks to solve time series problems

Supervisory -  At least 3 years experience managing a data science team in a product development organization

Software Development:

  • Experience with running Machine Learning algorithms
  • Familiarity with distributed computing frameworks like Spark or the Hadoop ecosystem
  • You have programmed in Python and are familiar with the scientific stack
  • You have experienceworking with SQL and Cloud based platforms like AWS
  • Having used the Agile methodology will be a plus

Communication – You know how to write for, and speak to different audiences and have excellent written, verbal and collaboration skills

Required Experience

Education – Advanced degree (Masters or Ph.D.) in Computer Science, Physics, Operational Research, Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Statistics, or related field

Energy – Ideal candidate would have experience with distributed energy resources, working familiarity with energy markets and economic dispatch applications
