     Reporting to the Deputy Director for Advancement and External Affairs, the Head of Communications and Marketing is responsible for developing strategic communications plans to build awareness about the Yale Center for British Art, including collections, exhibitions, programs, and resources, as well as to increase visitation from target audiences. Working with colleagues, this position will identify specific audiences, determine and execute a strategy for reaching them, and implement ways to grow and diversify such audiences. The position will create an integrated marketing and communications strategy to deliver  the institution's key messages across multiple platforms, including print and online to the general public, as well as university and scholarly communities nationally and internationally. This position collaborates with Yale's Office of Public Affairs and Communication to promote and support the Center's overall mission.

The position works with print, broadcast, and digital media, and develops long-term partnerships with writers, editors, designers, corporate sponsors, cultural organizations, state agencies, and other museum supporters. The position also oversees visitor services, marketing research and analysis, directs advertising campaigns, and coordinates the tri-annual Calendar of Events. The position works with curators, visiting scholars, and Yale faculty to promote significant projects and synthesize academic ideas and exhibition concepts to create stories for press and social media.  The position is responsible for training staff for press events, media tours, interviews, and multimedia projects. This position organizes national and international press launches in New York and London to announce projects for the coming year, and organizes press trips and media previews for major exhibitions.

The position manages internal communications for effective flow of news and information with Center staff, as well as crisis communications for the Center.  The position supervises a Communications and Marketing Associate, a Visitor Services/Information volunteer Coordinator; and student workers/interns.  Additionally, the Head of Communications and Marketing chairs for the Media, Technology, and Website Committee, and is responsible for management of the Center's website as well as it's online engagement and social media program.
Essential Duties     1. Determines strategies for public relations efforts. 2. Plans, directs, and oversees public relations and information programs designed to meet University goals and promote a positive awareness of multi-faceted educational institution. 3. Devises and plans methods to present information to media and community. 4. Develops, plans, writes, edits and distributes press releases, advertisements and other promotional material in alignment with communication strategy. 5. Formulates strategies to communicate and publicize the University’s best interests. 6. Oversees the design, productions, and distribution of various communication efforts. 7. Decides on content of public relations programs; determines extent and parameters of public relations efforts needed for particular circumstances and subject matters. 8. Disseminates and organizes timely, accurate, and comprehensive information to a variety of audiences both internally and externally to the University. 9. Initiates and generates ideas for programs, public relations efforts, and media communications. 10. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience     Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field and four years of experience in public relations, journalism, newspaper writing, editing, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:     Demonstrated superb writing skills. Proven editorial skills across multiple media such as print, web, and social media. Demonstrated knowledge of AP and/or Chicago Manual of Style.
Required Skill/Ability 2:     Proven success in strategic planning, organizational positioning and marketing plans. Demonstrated success in developing and managing multiple projects and deadlines from conception to completion with exceptional attention to detail. Excellent judgment in time sensitive situations.
Required Skill/Ability 3:     Demonstrated ability with press relations, including local, national (International preferred), print, onllne, and broadcast media campaigns. Demonstrated skills in areas such as training staff for media events and multimedia projects, as well as analyzing website and social media metrics.
Required Skill/Ability 4:     Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse group to achieve a common goal.
Required Skill/Ability 5:     Proficient In MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint; and Adobe lnDeslgn, Acrobat, and Photoshop. Demonstrated ability with email marketing systems. Proven skills In overseeing the production of videos, webcasts, and/or podcasts.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:     Five years of successful communications and marketing leadership responsibility. Experience with content management systems. Demonstrated ability with public speaking and presentation to the media. Master's degree In art history or journalism/communication. Experience working in a Museum, University, or Non-profit organization. Experience with Drupal, Bede works, and HTML editing.
