The Enterprise Infrastructure Architect position in the HPE Global IT organization is being created to lead the team of employees and contract vendors with overarching responsibility for strategy and architecture of HPE’s global infrastructure services and platforms. As the lead architect of this group, the architect will build upon our state of the art technology, and craft the processes needed by HPE to operate, innovate and grow. This position will also play a key role in driving HPE’s Global IT enterprise infrastructure technology roadmap and the ongoing lifecycle support.
This position reports to the Senior Director of Infrastructure services and is both a technical architect and an enterprise architect position with the requirement to fully understand and have sufficient background in technology strategy, business acumen, enterprise architecture and governance, and operations to lead a team of employee and contractor architects and subject matter experts.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Leads the overarching design and architecture of production and non-production IT Infrastructure environments (staging, QA and development) to ensure that capacity and performance meets existing and future requirements.
Develops architectural strategies and maintain roadmaps with latest industry trends, including technology standardization, modernization and virtualization
Acts as the primary interface with the business and application leadership to architect and strategize on infrastructure solutions and services to meet the needs and requirements
Align architectural strategy with business objectives, deliver designs that meet business requirements, are on time, and within budget
Analyze business and technical requirements to determine system design, potential issues, and related cost for each project request
Assist with the implementation and delivery of complex IT Infrastructure projects from planning, design, implementation and migration strategies that preserve the availability, performance, integrity, stability, and scalability of systems
Ensure availability and optimal performance management of services through continuous assessment operations
Provide leadership and direction to technical teams of employees, contractors and vendors on complex, cross-functional issues that cross technologies in server, storage, O/S, virtualization, consolidation, middleware, cloud, security applications/service proxy, operations, content switching, SAP Basis, Big Data platforms, content delivery networks and security
Architect, design and oversee deployment and ongoing support of Active Directory, enterprise directory, windows servers, Linux, Unix, DDI (DNS, DHCP, IPAM) and service proxy components.
Develop cloud and infrastructure strategy, including governance model, cost show-back dashboard, and self-service catalogue for cloud and on-premise provisioning
Lead the development of HPE’s private cloud strategy with a strong focus on “container-as-a-service” (CaaS), “infrastructure-as-a-service” (IaaS) and “platform-as-a-service” (PaaS).
Develop strategy and oversee deployment of automation and orchestration, including tools scripts, processes and standards to enable a low-touch/no-ops environment model
Maintain and oversee disaster recovery architecture and design to ensure business continuity targets can bet met
Develop and maintain high-level IT architecture documentation for deployed IT infrastructure, and oversee technical design documentation process for correctness and timeliness.
Develop and operationalize a demand management and infrastructure consulting engagement model with the business and application teams to provide consulting on application hosting and technology infrastructure services
Supervise employee and vendor architecture and operations staff including hiring, training, and evaluating.
Provide technical expertise for in the areas of architecture, and serve as an escalation resource for all technical needs.
Coordinate and execute upon approval adjustments and changes that increase performance and availability
Assess technical risk and technical debt and provide timely mitigation and remediation plans.
Evaluate emerging infrastructure technology and tools and drive the development of business cases for their use.
Contribute to and maintain system standards including Change Management.
Research and recommend possible automated approaches for administration tasks.
Provide platform design, definition and coordination of technical standards, and lead technology research for infrastructure, application hosting and cloud related platforms.
Lead architecture reviews and peer reviews to document and publish standards, policies, design sign-off, and guidelines for HW, on-prem vs cloud hosting, and high availability and disaster recovery designs
Master’s degree in Information Technology or related field, or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
18 years of experience with broad and deep technical knowledge of infrastructure services, cloud design and implementation, and ongoing operations for global scale organizations, with 12 years of experience as an infrastructure architect
10 years of management experience for outsource vendors or internal teams in infrastructure or closely related IT scope for project and steady state services.
Knowledge and experience with Azure, AWS, and cloud management, monitoring, and security.
Previous experience with multi-site, global datacenter rollouts, transformations and migrations.
Experience implementing multi-tier application provisioning in cloud technology stacks, integrating with Chef/Puppet/Ansible, etc.
Experience in best practices of SDLC methodologies like Agile, Scrum, waterfall and Devops/Cloud processes
Knowledge of Build/Release/Deployment/Operations (DevOps) models
Strong understanding across Cloud and infrastructure components (server, storage, backup, monitoring, and encryption) to deliver end to end Cloud and Infrastructure architectures and design.
Previous experience with and a working knowledge of platform Container Technologies (CaaS/PaaS) deploying, configuring and maintaining (Docker, Mesos DC/OS), and HyperVisor Technologies (IaaS) knowledge (VMWare and Openstack)
Experience and working knowledge of with Framework applications such as nginx+, MariaDB, MongoDB, Redis, Spark, Cassandra, Node.js, Jenkins, Elastic Stack
Previous experience with CI/CD deployment processes via GIT (source code management), Jenkins (automation services) and HashiCorp Vault (secrets management)
Previous experience with Data Center Infrastructure design – a thorough understanding of physical/virtual layout and relationships between server, SAN infrastructure, networking, power requirements, and server racking.
Previous experience with blade systems, hyper converges systems, mid-range and high-end HPE compute platforms.
Experience with building out SAN infrastructure – installation of SAN hardware enclosures and SAN switches as well as setup configuration of 3Par and Nimble storage.
Experience with design of Active Directory and other identity and access management frameworks, windows and linux OS’s, DDI (DNS, DHCP and IPAM), certificate and related components.
A self-starter with a strong interest in technology and its practical application along with the ability to deal with a fast-paced environment and ambiguity.
