Job Details

Applied Research Associates (ARA), Inc. Capital Area Division is seeking a scientist/engineer with subject matter expertise in developing geomechanical constitutive material models for modeling and simulation purposes. We are looking for candidates with a degree in Engineering, Geotechnical, or Physics with a modeling & simulation background and experience. A strong foundation in FORTRAN is a plus. This position will place you in a team of highly skilled professionals developing modeling and simulation codes that simulate shock and seismic wave mechanics. You will also develop computational constitutive models describing key mechanical behavior, update modeling / simulation codes, and implement new models. Our culture encourages personal and professional growth by pushing the limits of technology while creating opportunities for cross-training and mentoring within the team.

Roles include but not limited to:

  • Deriving material models of different rock classes from empirical data
  • Implementing material models in FORTRAN engineering codes and libraries
  • Data analysis and visualization of output from engineering physics codes and comparing to benchmark data for validity
  • Support testing, evaluation, and demonstrations of systems in unclassified and classified environments
  • Instructing courses on constitutive material modeling and developing tutorials for computational codes
  • Developing custom material models for specific test site geologies that range from shock to seismic pressure regimes.
  • Peer reviewing material model reports and simulation results

Preferred work location in Alexandria, VA; however, Albuquerque, NM would also be considered.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with engineering software codes for modeling & simulation
  • Bachelor's degree in geology, geotechnical engineering, geoscience, geophysics, structural mechanics or related degree with a minimum of 12 years experience
  • US citizen and the ability to obtain a Department of Defense security clearance
  • Experience developing non-linear mathematical models from empirical data

Desired Qualifications:

  • Development of software modeling codes and tools in a collaborative environment with versioning control
  • Related technical degrees (Engineering, Physics) and/or work experience with emphasis on physics-based models and simulation in any of the following; geotechnical, geo-mechanics, rock mechanics, underground structures, mining engineering, explosive effects, shock physics, computational continuum mechanics
  • Experience interpreting rocks mechanical property tests
  • Prior experience providing support to Countering of Weapons of Mass Destruction testing programs including ground shock effectiveness and underground structure hardness
  • FORTRAN programming experience
