PRIMARY PURPOSE: To be responsible for profitably, ethically and scientifically investigating events, systems, devices and/or failures and providing expert opinions; to provide guidance and leadership on complex engineering assignments.

This expert will have specific experience and expertise with the failure analysis of materials (including metals and polymers).

The ideal candidate will have a secondary discipline of expertise in forensic engineering (with a PE license).

This position will receive assignments/work from existing internal experts (engineers and fire investigators) as well as directly from external clients.

This hire will be to establish and grow a materials analysis practice within EFI Global.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provides guidance and leadership to newer colleagues and/or those with less experience on complex engineering assignments.
• Conducts investigations to determine the root cause of events and failures.
• Surveys property, casualty and liability losses, typically at residential and commercial buildings and loss scenes as well as in the laboratory.
• Works closely with engineers and investigators to produce detailed reports, drawings, and/or outline the cause and origin of losses and damages.  
• Develops reports to meet client’s needs and/or determine and document the failure analysis and causation of failures.
• Provides expert testimony in a court of law and/or in depositions.
• Determines applicable engineering practices to fulfill the prescribed scope of work, project specifics, timelines, and cost estimates for the professional services provided.
• Documents and maintains billable hours on a time and expense basis for failure analysis and engineering projects for clients.
• Collaborates with sales and operations managers, architects, developers, insurance adjusters, claims managers and attorneys to develop demand for your professional services.
• Collaborates with EFI’s national team of forensic experts to leverage experiences and assist on projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Licensing

• Bachelor's degree or greater from an accredited college or university..
• Specific training, experience, & expertise in materials science/failure analysis.
• Ideally Professional Engineering (PE) license and expertise in a secondary discipline (other than materials failure analysis).

Experience

At least five (5) years of experience or equivalent combination of experience and education required, including two (2) years of engineering experience specifically in failure analysis and forensic engineering. Experience with insurance and/or risk management also considered.
