Summary:This position provides project support and/or discipline support for various projects by researching, specifying, developing, designing, engineering and supporting construction of fire and gas detection and suppression systems. Individuals are expected to apply engineering principles, methods and techniques to the project assignments. Positions available in both Anchorage Alaska and Gulfport Mississippi offices.


  • Researches and analyzes data such as client design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.

  • Works with clients to develop a project’s scope of work, estimates, and/or schedules.

  • Reviews and approves project drawings, standards and specifications.

  • Develops major equipment, material selection, and construction specifications.

  • Uses computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks.

  • Directs and coordinates construction, installation, fabrication and/or operational testing activities to ensure services, products and/or systems conform to engineering design and client criteria.

  • Ensures that all assigned activities and operations comply with applicable codes, regulations and laws.

  • Evaluates field installations and applies codes and client specifications to project design.

  • Coordinates activities with other project disciplines involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation or repair of various materials, products or systems.

  • Provides technical direction, support and information to other specialists, engineers, designers and drafters.

  • Identifies changes to scope, estimates cost and schedule impacts; presents to project management for approval.

  • Consistently demonstrates professional skills in structuring assigned activities, creativity, teamwork, communications, operational efficiencies, handling of a client’s changing needs, decision making, and analyzing and solving problems.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Position requires State of Alaska IC and IIIC permits, or Nicet level III or IV in Fire Alarm and Special Hazards elements passed and relevant years experience to obtain State of Alaska Fire Permits. IIC or Level III/IV fire sprinkler certification desireable.

Design Experience

Optical flame detection;

IR open path and point combustible gas detection;

Combined fire and gas detection systems, Det-Tronics EQP experience preferred;

Installations in electrically classified areas;

Large complex systems with dozens of fire zones and 100’s of I/O;

Clean agent suppression systems.

Required Education/Experience:

  • Degree in Engineering Technology from an accredited institution.

  • Minimum 5 years experience in the fire protection field,

  • NICET Certification Level III required. Level IV Certification preferred.

  • Alaska State Fire Permit, Level I-C and III-C required. II-C permit desireable.

  • Experienced in North Slope, Arctic, and cold regions. Experience in Control Systems, Fire Safety, Instrumentation, Offshore Structures required.

Language Ability:

1. Read, analyze and interpret technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. 2. Write routine reports and correspondence. 3. Respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

Math Ability:

Math skills sufficient to: 1. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 2. Compute areas, volumes, rate, ratio, and percent. 3. Draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

1. Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. 2. Interpret an extensive variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills:

Ability to operate a keyboard and calculator by touch. To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient in MS Word and MS Excel, and Outlook and Access.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be located in either the Anchorage Alaska or Gulfport Mississippi office with occasional requirement to travel to the North Slope of Alaska.

The position requires a person that is able to travel and work in a remote location overnight or longer. The employee is occasionally exposed to work near mechanical parts; work in high, precarious places; potential exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, and arctic weather conditions. Facilities may require climbing ladders or multiple flights of stairs. Terms of employment require the employee to abide by all safety regulations, behaviors and conditions, as required at the local or remote work locations.

The noise level in the work environment is usually high in the Process Areas and requires Hearing Protection. Work in Anchorage or Gulfport will be in an office building environment.

Some company locations and projects require the employee to travel to remote industrial facilities which will require the employee to fly in aircraft of various sizes and visit the production facilities where excessive noise, heat and cold temperature will be experienced. The ability to climb ladders, stairs and traverse industrial platforms in the performance of the specialist’s duties will be required.
