Responsibilities of the Financial Consultant - Tax Department

Responsible for minimizing impact taxes have on company earnings, cash resources, investments and employee benefits through accurate and timely tax compliance, research and planning.  Coordinates certain tax filings, payments and miscellaneous research projects. Participates in employee benefit plantax filings, Department of Labor compliance and planning. Responsible for the preparation and timely and accurate filing of federal, state and local tax returns.  Participates in federal, state and local taxaudits. Assists in preparation of year-end tax provision, computation of deferred taxes and preparation of applicable financial statement disclosures.

 Preferred Tax Qualifications:

  • CPA

Knowledge of:

  • Property and Casualty Insurance Industry and tax return concepts
  • Bank/financial institution tax concepts
  • ASC 749 and SSAP 101
  • Premium tax returns
  • Sales and use tax returns
  • Sage fixed asset system
  • OneSource income tax software
  • PeopleSoft financialreporting system

Ability to:

  • Make decisions and propose solutions in accordance with applicable laws
  • Analyze complex financial data
  • Prepare and present written and oral reports
  • Analyze, organize and present facts and related material effectively
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with tax authorities and other departments within organization
  • Work irregular hours as required
  • Communicate effectively with others in a work environment
  • Continuously review, evaluate and suggest improvements to tax department processes

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Federal, state and local income taxlaws
  • ASC 740 and/or SSAP 101

Experience:

  • Making decisions and recommending solutions in accordance with applicable taxlaw or accounting procedures and established insurance industry practice and procedure
  • Researching ongoing changes in taxlaw requirements in order to assess the impact to tax return filings and provision computations
  • Working with governmental officials, IRS agents, state and local tax authorities preparing federal and state income tax returns
  • Developing complex Excel spreadsheets
  • Working in either a corporate tax department or CPA firm tax practice
  • Strong organizational, planning, time management and administrative skills demonstrated through work experience
  • Strong communication skills in order to present complex information in a clear and understandable manner 

Work Environment:

  • Works in a temperature-controlled office environment. 

Qualifications of the Financial Consultant - Tax Department

Education:

  •  Bachelordegree in Accounting, Business, Finance, Mathematics, Statistics or Economics. 

Experience:   

  • equivalent to a senior position within Finance/Accounting or other related fields
  • developing complex financial models using macros and other advanced spreadsheet applications (i.e. EXCEL) and experience using other software applications (i.e. Microsoft Office)
  • providing oversight to less senior employees in the quality of work product
  • analysis of technical issues and complex financial data and developing sound conclusions
  • the design and implementation of medium to large projects
  • problem identification and resolutions techniques

Knowledge and Skills:

  • analyze complex financial data
  • develop and implement new financial analytical and reporting systems
  • Communicate effectively with others in a work environment
  • prepare and present written and oral reports
  • Strong organizational, planning, time management and administrative skills demonstrated through work experience.

Tax:

Experience:

  • make decisions and recommend solutions in accordance with applicable taxlaw or accounting procedures and established insurance industry practice and procedure
  • working with governmental officials and/or IRS agents, taxing authorities and jurisdictions
  • preparation of corporate and state income tax returns and/or premium tax returns
  • Work within a corporate tax department or a CPA firm tax practice 

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Federal, state and local taxlaws
  • FAS 109 and/or SSAP 10 deferred tax accounting

  • Salary for the Financial Consultant - Tax Department $70,000 - $85,000
