The ASPCA is currently seeking a Facilities Maintenance Manager, who will be responsible for overseeing the regular maintenance and repairs on the ASPCA’s equipment and properties in North Carolina, including The Behavior Rehabilitation Center and the Humane Alliance. Launched in March 2013, the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, New Jersey, is the first and only facility dedicated to the study and rehabilitation of extremely fearful, undersocialized dogs, such as those confiscated from puppy mills and hoarding situations.  This year the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center is relocating to a new permanent facility in Weaverville, North Carolina.  Humane Alliance (HA) is a nationally-recognized program of the ASPCA in Asheville that focuses on high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) training. 

The Facilities Maintenance Manager will play a critical role at these facilities, overseeing all Planned Preventative Maintenance programs and forecasting and fulfilling the need for new equipment when required.  The Facilities Manager will report to the Senior Director of Facilities Operations.

The Facilities Manager must be willing to work a flexible schedule (Monday- Friday, Tuesday-Saturday or Sunday-Thursday) but also be on 24/7 call as necessary.


Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

Maintenance (70%)

  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on buildings and facilities
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to buildings and facilities including carpentry, light plumbing and light electrical work
  • Remove snow/ice as needed
  • Coordinate maintenance and repairs to appliances including stoves, refrigerators and washing machines
  • Order parts and supplies as needed
  • Perform light vehicle maintenance (filling up tires, adding windshield wiper fluid and antifreeze, checking oil and transmission fluid)
  • Schedule and take vehicles in to shop for inspections and maintenance
  • Coordinate with local ASPCA staff and assist the Senior Director in planning, organizing and directing the general maintenance and repair of the ASPCA’s North Carolina based sites
  • Ensure all Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) is completed safely, cost effectively, on time and to a satisfactory standard
  • Assist Senior Director in monitoring of essential building systems to ensure systems are operating correctly and efficiently.  Such systems include; Automated Building Management System, electrical, mechanical, security, elevator, fire alarm panel and suppression system, plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems
  • Ensure all systems are performing as optimal as possible to reduce operating cost
  • Regularly inspect buildings, sites and equipment for needed repair/maintenance
  • Establish Facilities user relations and maintain regular contact.  Monitor feedback obtained by all users via the work order system, emails, routine visits, etc.
  • Learn about job related maintenance protocols and take training and course work to enhance knowledge of Facilities Management

Administrative (20%)

  • Liaise with contractors or external suppliers and clearly communicate ASPCA safety, technical and contractual issues and standards
  • Prepare weekly/monthly maintenance and repair reports and otherreports as needed
  • Coordinate work activities among departments, including set-ups and break-downs for meetings and special events
  • Conduct orientation training and in-service training to explain policies, work procedures, and to demonstrate use and maintenance of equipment
  • Track certificate of Insurance for vendors and contractors
  • Maintain product specifications and SDS sheets for all locations, update as necessary
  • Support the preparation of documentation prior to hearings and attend legal hearings with Compliance

Management (10%)

  • Interact with ASPCA program managers to effectively communicate all Repairs & Maintenance concerns to Senior Director in a timely fashion
  • Investigate complaints regarding housekeeping service and equipment, and takes corrective actions
  • Manage cleaning schedule, set custodians assignments including regular cleaning and special cleaning/projects as well

Additional Information:

  • 5 years facilities/property management/office management experience (preferred)
  • Five years managerial experience (preferred)
  • 5+ years experience with commercial heating, ventilation and air conditioning operation, maintenance and repair (preferred)
  • Experience in a animal shelter setting strongly (preferred)
  • Knowledge of Building Management, Facilities and Construction management (preferred)
  • Ability to read building plans (required)
  • Experience using a work order ticketing system (strongly preferred)
  • Willingness to travel among North Carolina sites on a regular basis

Training/Licensing Requirements: (Will need to obtain within 90-120 days)

  • Must provide a valid driver’s license upon hire and pass a motor vehicle history check demonstrating a safe driving history.
  • OSHA 10 hour training certificate
  • Obtain all North Carolina training certifications and licensing requirements, based on evolving facility and equipment needs to maintain compliance with state and local agencies

Education and Work Experience:

Associates,High School Diploma or GED (Required)
