The WJE Detroit branch office located in Bingham Farms, MI is seeking a highly-qualified licensed Professional Engineer (P.E. or S.E.) or licensed architect with approximately 10 years of relevant experience and expertise in the areas of structural engineering and roofing, waterproofing, and building enclosure consulting for both existing structures and new construction.

While project managementresponsibilities will be commensurate with experience, the ideal candidate will participate in all aspects of a project, including development and maintenance of client relationships, management of project teams, management of safety issues and responsibility for all client deliverables, including technical content. The ideal candidate should be a well-rounded professional who leads project teams, contributes to the company, is able to tackle complex assignments, and is an expert in one or more of the primary practice areas of WJE. The candidate should be active in local industry organizations, serving on professional or technical committees. The ideal candidate would be expected to contribute to WJE through mentoring of junior staff, participation in office and company development initiatives, business development, and participation with the in-house Technical Resource Groups.

Candidate must be technically competent in building materials, field investigation methods, and scientific principles as they relate to structural engineering and roofing, waterproofing, and building enclosure performance. Candidate must have experienceinvestigating and remediation of failing structural or enclosure systems in existing structures as well as advising on or designing new structural and enclosure systems.

Requirements:

  • Licensed  Professional Engineer (P.E. or S.E.) or Licensed Architect

  • Degreed in a related field with approximately 10 years of relevant experience and expertise in structural engineering and building enclosure types and systems

  • A strong portfolio of regional experience and an understanding of the local marketplace

  • Previous experience with construction, building concepts, and general contracting

  • An interest in solving problems with existing structures and in designing enclosure systems for new construction

  • Strong generalist background

  • Experience managing projects of varying sizes

  • Active in professional organizations

  • Strong technical, written, and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work in the field and travel outside local area, depending on local workload and project locations

Typical Functions:

  • Acts as the primary client contact for projects, responsible for client satisfaction and all project deliverables

  • Builds new and existing client relationships

  • Mentors junior staff

  • Participates in professional organizations, authors papers, attends conferences, and performs work on technical committees

  • Develops scopes of service and prepares proposals

  • Assembles appropriate project team based on needs analysis and negotiates for available resources

  • Manages project team, schedule and budget

  • Invoices client and follows up on outstanding accounts

  • Prepares technical reports

  • Prepares drawings, specifications, and final project deliverables

  • Prepares bid documents, addenda, change orders, and other work product

  • Conducts on-site inspection/investigation including survey and documentation of distress, field testing, sampling, photographing, and sketching

  • Conducts on-site observations of work in progress

  • Analyzes research and investigation data and develops alternate schemes for solving problems

  • Monitors and/or conducts field testing

  • Attends field meetings and prepares site observation reports

  • Performs administrative tasks in a timely manner to support office functions

This position requires visual acuity and listening ability. Individuals must have the dexterity to be able to operate office and field equipment such as computer, printer, fax, copier, telephone, voice mail system, and other office and field equipment. Requirements may also include:

  • Ability to attend meetings at various office, field and construction sites

  • Ability to perform inspections of buildings and other structures, both visually and with instruments

  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 lbs.

  • Ability to perform work in the temperature extremes presented by work in the outdoors

  • Ability to read construction drawings, diagrams, printed materials and computer screens

  • Ability to record data clearly and write passages for reports, letters, etc.

  • Ability to travel

  • Ability to safely work at heights

  • Ability to safely use and/or operate ladders, scaffolds, lifts and other access equipment

  • Ability to understand and appreciate safety training specific to numerous workplace and construction hazards

  • Ability to safely work in a variety of occupationally hazardous locations

  • Medically fit to utilize respiratory protection devices and other forms of Personal Protective Equipment

  • Ability to drive and safely operate a motor vehicle
