Job Description

LAMB's Mission: To create a self-directed learning environment in which children build a foundation of knowledge essential for a lifetime of learning while developing bi-literacy in English and Spanish.

LAMB offers a unique model that provides bilingual Montessori public education to diverse, urban families in the Nation's Capital. LAMB serves children in PK through 5th grade. Since children must begin attending the school at three or four years old, LAMB is a community that embraces our active parent community and maintains a staff that is committed to children and promotes peace and equality for all.

JOB SUMMARY

The Executive Director carries out LAMB's broad educational mission and policies as established by the Board of Trustees including:

  • Embraces and champions LAMB's mission
  • Maintains licensing and accreditation requirements and compliance with all regulating agencies
  • Leads and manages faculty and staff to continue nationally recognized standards of quality education and care
  • Cultivates effective relationships with all constituents, including students, families, faculty, staff, board of trustees, community members and key stakeholders
  • Demonstrates accountability for the operating budget and financial stability of LAMB
  • Drives enrollment growth and student retention in all programs, including facility management
  • Fosters a culturally and socio-economically diverse population
  • Manages day-to-day operations of LAMB

Specific responsibilities for this position include:

1.    Maintains an effective relationship with the Board of Trustees. Works closely with Board of Trustees on matters affecting mission, strategic plan and fiscal matters.

2.   Develops and leads the administrative team of LAMB. The Executive Directorshares and delegates to his or her immediate subordinates in a manner that promotes effective communication and works to produce smooth day-to-day internal operations.

3.   Serves as a primary spokesperson for LAMB and promotes its programs to the public. Supports meaningful alumni, parent, past-parent and greater community participation in events that aid and support the goals of LAMB.

4.  Effectively assesses, manages and mitigates risks that will negatively impact the mission of the school. Recommends responses to regulatory and legislative actions that mitigate potential impacts.

5.  Works closely with finance manager to prepare the annual budget for review and approval by the finance committee and presentation and approval by the Board of Trustees. Ensures that the available financial resources are carefully managed within the budgetary guidelines. Is responsible for the preparation of monthly financial statements to the Board on various matters concerning LAMB's financial health, including enrollment, outstanding accounts, income, expenditures, and cash flow projections. 

6.  In concert with the Principal, architect a comprehensive talent acquisition and retention vision and strategic plan, which includes concrete recommendations for improvement and specific, achievable deliverables, namely:

  • A comprehensive staff development program ensuring high performing team members are engaged, retained, and have clear development opportunities and career pathways
  • A program/process for building the management and leadership capacity of teacher, leaders and all other school support staff  
  • A sustainable system by which we recruit and retain highly talented and diverse team members
  • A robust performance management process which outlines for all staff, including teachers and leaders, the measured steps required to maintain and/or gain proficiency; process and causes for dismissal as well intervention procedure when expressed goals are not met. 
  • Build, steward and socialize an organizational culture strategy, which includes a robust on and off boarding program and integrates and socializes our core values and commitment to equity.

7.  Assumes ultimate responsibility for ensuring development and fundraising goals are met.Articulates the center's unique mission and the value of the goals for which funds are being raised to constituents and community. Efforts including working with the Board to increase fundraising activities, grant writing supervision, and coordinating with parent volunteers on the Arriba campaign.

8.  Ensures LAMB meets and exceeds all regulatory requirements and pursues the highest level of quality care and Montessori education. Works with staff to identify curriculum needs and program support. Works with the faculty to develop and implement procedures for tracking student status and progress. Works with the DC Public Charter School Board to maintain regulatory requirements.

9.  Advocates for quality care and education in the District. Finds opportunities for the expansion of LAMB's role as a model center for high quality, multi-age group settings and partnerships to increase the availability of quality care and education for all children.

10.  Works to promote constructive relationships between students, faculty and administrators, recognizing the importance of developing each individual. Communicates LAMB's achievements, progress and milestones to Board of Trustees, parents, constituents and community. Consciously works to establish an atmosphere of team building and planning. Supports timely communications to LAMB's internal constituents on successes and challenges within the school community. Lead on internal staff committees charged with ensuring that culture reflects our core values and commitment to diversity and inclusion. 

11.  Special Projects. LAMB has been working for years to find a facility that will house all of its students. We are currently working from three different locations and are in the process of combining campuses starting in 2018-2019. The Executive Director will take a leadership role, working with our partners and constituents to facilitate this move.

DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS

Language:

  •    Bilingual Spanish and English Preferred

Education:

  • Masters degree from accredited institution, preferably in the fields of Education, Public Policy, Non-profit or Business Management.

Experience:

  • Montessori credential and/or experience. Independent school administration. Non-profit management.

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of the academic, fiscal, social and advocacy responsibilities of a non-profit center and school.
  • Montessori-based curriculum knowledge and program development highly preferred, but not required.
  • Business operational knowledge including leadership, management and budget. Community building. Experience with state licensing and accreditation requirements.

Skills/Competencies:

  • Able to manage the vision and purpose of Montessori education philosophy, while enhancing the diversity and inclusion of thought, experience and cultures within an education setting.
  • Strong business acumen with ability to make decisions and positively influence the customer experience.
  • Effective leadership that will motivate the various constituencies to be strong stakeholders.
  • Sophisticated understanding of building and sustaining diverse and inclusive cultures with a racial equity focus.
  • High sense of integrity with ability to maintain composure and relate well to individual of all levels, experiences, and backgrounds.
  • Experienced change manager, able to effectively manage conflict, displaying empathy and dignity for all parties involved.
  • Strategic thinker able to set priorities and inform/communicate with proper constituents in a culturally appropriate, compassionate yet clear fashion.
