San Francisco SAFE, (Safety Awareness for Everyone), the City’s highly regarded crime prevention and public safety organization, is seeking an Executive Director (ED). As a 501c3, SAFE is a unique safety program that works in cooperation with the San Francisco Police Department and other City agencies to help San Franciscans protect themselves from becoming victims of crime and to increase resiliency in all areas of personal safety. SAFE bridges the gap between residents and City services, including law enforcement and local government, through community engagement in order to sustain vibrant and collaborative neighborhoods and business corridors.

The Executive Director must be a visionary who is able to provide dynamic inspiration, leadership, structure and motivation to the staff and to the Board of Directors. The ED must also have the highest ethics, be personable, social, welcoming, open, creative, energetic, articulate, flexible and possess a sense of humor.

- Demonstrated operational planning experience including budgeting skills and strategic revenue creation through diversifying income streams.
- A history of successful fundraising through development of relationships with supporters and sponsors for a nonprofit including through donor gifts, events, grants and innovative thinking.
Under the policy guidelines set by the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will manage the operations and personnel of San Francisco SAFE and its programs. The ED will provide statistics on deliverables, project accomplishments and provide recommendations to the Board of Directors, plan and implement programs designed to affect specific public safety and crime prevention needs, conduct liaison work with City departments, community and civic organizations, business organizations, private foundations, and perform related duties as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Business and Programs:
- Implements and monitors the policies and procedures of San Francisco SAFE.
- Oversees special programs related to disaster response, public housing safety, child safety and SAFE’s membership program.
- Oversees administration of the organization, including items relating to human resources, personnel, financial, technology and development.
- Collects statistical information, both quantitative and qualitative, for and prepares monthly and quarterly reports.
- Monitors evaluative data to ensure progress is being made toward targeted goals.
- Evaluates SAFE’s outreach and works with Board, Staff and agencies to widen SAFE’s reach into underserved areas, identifying and generating supportive funding.
- Leads SAFE Staff including hiring, orientation, training, managing and retaining the diverse and collaborative team.
- Ensures that all employees collect, prepare and maintain accurate work records.
- Develops and oversees compliance with minimum performance standards that can be evaluated through field supervision and site evaluations.
- Maintains fiscal integrity and viability of budget.
- Ensures compliance with all contracts and grants.
- Manages sub-consultants, contractors, and fiscally sponsored programs.
- Diversifies funding by expanding income opportunities, grants and donations.
Board of Directors:
- With the Executive Committee, plans, provides materials in advance and attends the monthly Board of Directors meetings.
- Works with the Board of Directors in planning and policy formulation.
- Keeps Board members adequately informed in a timely way of administrative and program activities, crime trends, etc.
- Serves as principal spokesperson for SAFE; serves as information and public relations liaison; addresses public hearings, City and County agencies, commissions, etc.
- Works with San Francisco Police Department, otherlaw enforcement agencies, the Board of Supervisors, City Departments and community groups to address crime and public safety issues, and problem-solve on a large scale.
- Gives presentations to the public or City Departments as needed on topics including: SAFE Services, Personal Safety, Neighborhood Watch, and others.
- Leads, and participates in, the organization’s social media and outreach efforts.
- Develops Fundraising plan, coordinates events and activities that generate and diversify income.
- Identifies granting sources, writes, monitors and evaluates grants that contribute to the programmatic enhancement of SAFE’s services.
- Solicits individual and corporate donors and sponsors, for SAFE’s general fund and for specific activities and events.
- Works with Board and staff to plan and conduct annual fundraising events.
Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science or other field related to the position, Criminal Justice, Public Administration.
- Successful hands on community organizing experience including productive problem-solving, team building, training & conflict resolution.
- Ability to be and remain politically neutral.
- Knowledge of the criminal justice field, non-profit & public sectors is a plus.
- Experience in working with all levels of government a plus.
- Five (5) years of management experience, preferably in the public or non-profit sector.
- Successful hiring, managing, retaining and evaluating personnel.
- Demonstrated success in administration including budgeting, organizing, management, purchasing and operational finances.
- Demonstrated fundraising and grant writing success.
- Current computer skills, database entry, Microsoft Office, Outlook.
- Effective oral, written and presentations skills.
- Some nights and weekends are required.
