In this announcement of an Executive Director for Career Services, Purdue Fort Wayne seeks a bold thinker who will formally be housed in the Division of Student Affairs but will strategize, vision, and have influence with the senior leadership team comprised of the university’s Chancellor and Vice Chancellors. The aim is to establish a campus environment that weaves together the interplay of academics, student employment and career development, with workforce readiness. As a result of this organizational elevation, Purdue Fort Wayne is seeking a new Executive Director of Career Services who embraces this fusion and builds on the synergy with counterparts across campus to expand our career platforms and maximize employer relationships.
The Executive Director of Career Services reports to the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs. The Executive Director drives the strategic, innovative long-term vision for Career Services. With student success at the core of Purdue University Fort Wayne’s strategic priorities, this executive level position will champion the linkages that assist our students, graduates, alumni, faculty, and employers in the development of career education, career identification, cooperative education programs, internship opportunities, and employment opportunities commensurate with formal academic pursuits.
The Executive Director will work with our educators and campus faculty in a collaborative, interactive approach to coordinating the career pipeline for our students and graduates. The Executive Director will work extensively in the community to grow and develop our career to employer pipeline aimed to expand the university’s impact on workforce development in our Indiana markets. In addition, the Executive Director will lead and supervise a team of Career Services Professionals in strategically planning the search support, programming, and resources for students, graduates and alumni.
The main responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
LEADERSHIP & SUPERVISION (50%)
- Sets overall goals and strategic priorities for career development and career pipelines, in conjunction with the Chancellor’s Executive Council
- Lead and incorporate the vision into development of a high-impact office and unit within the campus community
- Use understanding of career development theories to design and deliver career education, career identification, cooperative education programs, internship opportunities, and employment opportunities
- Awareness of national and regional trends in higher education, career services, employee relations, the economy, and the resulting impact on Purdue Fort Wayne’s population of students, academic programs, and alumni
- Participates in university development efforts to raise funds for critical career experiential opportunities, including presentations to potential donors and grant writing for foundation support
RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPMENT & STAKEHOLDER COMMUNICATIONS (15%)
- Establish and expand relationships with regional employers, non-profits, government organizations, alumni and families as needed to steward, develop and track externships, internships, cooperatives, full-time hiring and programming opportunities in collaboration with employers.
- Participate in outreach efforts to active employers, alumni, donors, and community stakeholders, including job/career fairs.
- Collaborate with stakeholder relationships to get a clear view on their strategic hiring needs, identify the types of candidates that are required for their company or organization.
- Co-Coordinate with the Chancellor’s Executive Council to facilitate the discussion on common issues, resources, and solutions used to manage career-related services for undergraduate and graduate/professional students, alumni, and the community.
- Develop understanding of the unique needs within the various schools and units at Purdue Fort Wayne; contribute to the development of programs and career pipelines relevant to those needs and congruent with workforce needs in the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana and the region.
- Participate in various local, state, regional and national organizations to increase presence of Purdue Fort Wayne Career Services and our role in workforce development, career education, and networking events that build potential externships and employer databases.
DIRECT SERVICES (20%)
- Plan, promote and market career services and information to students, including information resources, individual career counseling, and career pipelines.
- Supervise recruitment, interviewing processes and other facets of career planning, as well as resume referral and job listing services for current students and alumni.
- Conducts workshops, seminars, and other presentations to student, faculty, employer, and alumni groups.
- Partner with academic leaders and faculty to develop career programs and initiatives that affect student’ marketability to employers.
STRATEGIC PLANNING & ASSESSMENT (15%)
- Drive the annual and multi-year strategic vision for the office. Lead staff in developing and implementing strategic priorities.
- Utilize assessment information to innovate programs and services.
- Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Research to yield elevated response rates on annual career outcomes reporting as required by state, accrediting, and federal agencies, as well as tracking all student/graduate cohorts to report to university stakeholders.
- Stay current on changing economic and labor conditions and industry trends in Indiana, region, and nationally.
Minimum Hiring Standards
- Master’s degree in Business, Public Administration, Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related field
- Eight to nine (8-9) years experience leading career initiatives with excellent business acumen, workforce development insight, and knowledge of professional recruitment, or equivalent experience in community workforce development, higher education, human resources, or career center
- Minimum five (5) years of experience supervising teams, capable of inspiring and motivating a team
- Budget development and financial management experience
- Demonstrated ability to connect and build relationships, and with great networking talents that build long-lasting employer relationships
- Goal-setting and strategic planning aptitude
- Exceptional communication skills (written, oral, presentation), critical thinking skills, and strong analytical skills
- Strong knowledge of learning outcomes assessment and evaluation strategies experience
- Ability to embrace change and to organize and effectively manage multiple priorities, programs, and projects in a fast paced, changing university environment
- Proven track record of successfully growing initiatives
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse student environment
- Able to work with a variety of sectors including business, labor, government, education, and the community
- Deep understanding and strong familiarity with the local job market
