Reporting to the associate vice chancellor/vice chancellor for Medical Advancement, the Executive Director leads a team of three fundraisers and has the primary goal of increasing support from local, regional, and national private foundations. Working closely with School of Medicine academic leadership and faculty the Executive Director and CFR team seek to identify new funding opportunities from private grant makers through the expansion of existing relationships and by building new ones. The team surveys the private foundation landscape in search of funders whose goals align with WUSM priorities and helps to catalyze those funding opportunities. The Executive Director will project the confidence and possess the needed set of experiences to be a WUSM thought-partner on private foundation philanthropy. They will bring together campus partners around initiatives to help yield effective ideas and proposals.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Fundraising: In collaboration with School of Medicine leadership and faculty, maintain a dynamic portfolio of key foundation contacts and secure new levels of institutional support through gifts and grants.
- Oversee the CFR team consisting of three professional fundraisers, one assistant director (partial reporting) and one administrative assistant (partial reporting).
- Serve as the lead for Medical Advancement CFR as a liaison for the School of Medicine leadership and faculty.
- Provide strategic direction for the design and management of a comprehensive CFR program in the school of medicine. Build collaborative, positive relationships with University Advancement staff and other university colleagues.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree
- At least eight to ten years of progressively responsible fundraising and management experience in advancement, particularly in corporate and foundation relations.
- Significant personal involvement with major proposals to local and national foundations.
- Significant experience in working with faculty/physicians in a science related institution or academic medical center.
- Highly successful, experienced and sophisticated professional with thorough knowledge of institutional development, and experience in foundation and corporate relations, particularly in higher education.
- Ability to work effectively with faculty and academic leadership.
- Ability to plan, organize, and direct development programs requiring a high degree of coordination and cooperation with other staff.
- Excellent leadership/management skills to select, train, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff.
- Proven track record of soliciting and closing foundation grants, gifts, and sponsorships in the six- and seven-figure range.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse constituents (board members, chancellor, vice chancellors, dean, school or unit directors, and faculty).
- Exemplary interpersonal skills, with the ability to successfully interact with sophisticated foundation leaders, volunteers, donors and institutional leadership.
- Exceptional organizational abilities with commitment to meet deadlines.
- Master’s degree or terminal degree.
- Experience within a complex university, national non-profit organization, or organization with sub-units and complex reporting relationships.
