The Executive Director will be responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the Program in Public Sector Leadership, working with students, staff, faculty and alumni, helping to shape each semester’s courses and programming, and planning events such as lectures, roundtables, workshops and networking events around public sector topics, including government, charities, and other institutions focused on serving the public. The Program was established in 2021, with the objective of creating focused educational and professional training for Yale Law School students who wish to assume public sector leadership roles. The Program’s aim is to ensure that students are capable of translating principle into practice, display a firm grasp of the economic, civic, and practical operational dimensions of superior policy work, and are equipped to engage in ethical reflection and decision-making. Resources will include alumni networking support, guidance regarding public sector career choices, employment opportunities with public sector employers, and directed curricular and programming guidance in law school. The Executive Director will be charged with managing the administration of the student fellows program, including coordination of fellow selection, shepherding students through the curricular and programmatic requirements for fellowship, and tracking completion prior to graduation. The Executive Director is responsible for reviewing the budget and working with many colleagues, organizations, and interested individuals with whom we collaborate. The position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as administrative and organizational abilities. The Executive Director will support the Program’s Faculty Directors in their objectives and responsibilities and will collaborate with the Assistant Dean for Leadership Programs on initiatives and programming related to the Leadership Program more broadly.
Specific responsibilities of the Executive Director include:
Formulating, establishing and implementing policies for the Program.
Administering the Program’s programs.
Working with students, including providing academic and career guidance.
Managing the administrative staff of the Program.
Overseeing public relations (web site, social media, press releases).
Speaking in high-profile venues.
Organizing special events and symposia.
Developing the annual budget.
Performing financial forecasting and monthly expenditure oversight, including donor reports.
Providing support for visiting professors and scholars at the Program.
Stewarding key alumni relationships.
Overseeing student fellows program.
Managing public sector alumni mentorship networks, including within the online platform, The Courtyard.
1. Directs one or more functional areas within an administrative department of the University and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures. 2. Directs analytic and research support for educational policies and planning and develops and approves administrative policies affecting assigned functional areas of the University. 3. Directs and establishes parameters for major projects for the department and University. 4. Interprets federal policies and regulations and educates staff and administration about regulations, restrictions, and the legal responsibilities of the University. 5. Directs and implements policy and program modifications and develops standards to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. 6. Develops and administers an operating budget for the assigned department consistent with University policies and procedures. 7. Develops cost savings objectives and goals; authorizes major purchases and negotiates contracts that range from routine to complex in nature. 8. Establishes and implements long- and short-range goals for the functional area consistent with University goals and objectives. 9. Directs the development of related automated systems to support the function; determines office policies and procedures for use of automated systems. 10. Directs the evaluation and selection of vendors and negotiates contract details including work steps and pricing with the vendors on behalf of the assigned functional area. 11. Works with internal and external contacts to solve problems that range from routine to complex in nature. 12. Represents the University in discussions and negotiations with various governmental agencies. 13. Directs a staff of exempt and nonexempt employees. 14. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in related field. Six years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Proven organizational and administrative ability. Exceptional communications skills, including writing, public speaking, and student advising.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Facility with financial forecasting, budgeting, monthly expenditure oversight, and interpreting financial and donor reports.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Solid technical skills, including managing mentoring networks, web site presence, social media and press releases.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues and manage staff. Proven ability to work with diverse constituencies in an effective manner.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
JD and/or MBA with at least two years of work experience in law or business preferred.
