About the Advancement leadership role:
This job is a true hybrid of fundraising and marketing communications. The ExecutiveDirector for Advancement is the lead development and external relations officer for IU’s School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. This professional also will work closely with theschool’s dean to lead a strategic development and marketing communications programthat enhances the school’s reputation, generates significant philanthropic support, engages alumni and helps recruit and retain students, faculty, and staff for the school.
On the development side, the Executive Director works with a team to cultivate, solicit, and close individual major and principal gifts from the School’s alumni and friends. In the midst IU’s $2.5B system-wide Bicentennial Campaign, the ExecutiveDirector will lead the school’s campaign strategy and efforts, working closely withthe Indiana University Foundation, the IU Alumni Association, and IU Communications.
On the communications side, the Executive Director plans, directs, and manages marketing communications and public relations for the school and its departments, centers, programs, and institutes. The Executive Director manages the school’s external affairs staff and activities to create strong branding and messaging built around the school’s mission and promotion of the liberal arts in general. The external affairs team facilitates the school’s communications, community involvement, media relations, websites, social media, collateral materials, and more. The primary communication objectives are fundraising and student recruitment communications.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced, visionary leader, serving as a valued member of the deans’ cabinet and capable of managing a team of up to 10-15 professional, support, and student staff.
REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree and at least 5-8 years ofadvancement/communications leadership experience in a fundraising environment, including major and principal gift experience. Supervisory experience required.
PREFERRED: Higher education fundraising/marketing communications experience, 7-10 years’ professional fundraising/external communications experience. Master’s degree or professional fundraising certification strongly preferred.
Working Conditions / Physical Demands
This position requires extensive periods of time at the computer and on the phone. Mental effort is required to balance the demands of program implementation withorganizational goals, and direct fundraising. Out-of-town overnight trips are rare
