DEPARTMENTAL SUMMARY: The Community Engagement Department focuses on the interface between the community and St. Charles. Specific programs include: foundation, community relations, community benefit, and volunteers. This team ensures St. Charles is a recognized cornerstone of Central Oregon, committed to the health of community members and the economic development of the region.
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Executive Director of Community and Philanthropy provides executive leadership to establish St. Charles as a recognized cornerstone of Central Oregon, committed to the health of community members and the economic development of the region. This position is also the chief advancement officer for St. Charles, serving as Executive Director of St. Charles Foundation and accountable to its Board of Directors. The Executive Director of Community and Philanthropy works extensively with other health system leaders and caregivers to build dynamic and productive relationships between all of our communities and the health system. This role requires a collaborative and strategic partnership with the Director of Marketing and Communications to ensure alignment of programs linked to the organizations strategic direction. This position directly manages caregivers in the Community Engagement Department and requires substantial nights and weekend work
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
The Engagement Team focuses on the interface between the community and St. Charles and who function as an integrated team, with all caregivers working together toward common goals. Specific programs include: foundation, community relations, community benefit, and volunteers. The Executive Director of Community and Philanthropy is responsible for the development and implementation of plans that link St. Charles in a proactive and focused way with key internal and external stakeholders to provide awareness and support for the Health System’s vision, mission, and values and help attract the financial resources necessary for St. Charles to achieve its strategic aspirations. This position directly supervises four positions: Senior Philanthropy Officer, Manager of Community Partnerships, Supervisor of Volunteer and Guest Services, and Foundation Coordinator.
Foundation: Serve as Executive Director of the Foundation, accountable to the Foundation’s board of directors to articulate and promote the organization’s vision and case for support to potential donors and partners with the goal of expanding support for St. Charles. As chief advancement officer, work through Senior Philanthropy Officer and foundation team to establish annual and multi-year fund raising goals to support SCHS’s strategic priorities through campaigns, major gifts, annual campaigns, gift planning, and recognition and stewardship. Directly supervise a portfolio of high-level prospects with key internal leadership as well as manage own portfolio of major gift donors.
Community relations: Lead the identification and implementation of key external strategic partnerships, with an emphasis on building vision/mission relationships and connections with thought-leaders. In collaboration with St. Charles marketing and communications department, build awareness through speaking engagements, storytelling, events, printed materials, social media, manage community sponsorship programs and develop strategies for communicating with elected officials to gain support for health system activities and enhance positive working relationships. Oversee Regional Advisory Groups, and Patient and Family Advisory Committee program. Link senior staff with community organizations and activities to increase SCHS’s visibility and responsiveness to community.
Community benefits: Lead planning and collaboration with Population Health Team for community benefits program with the goal of measurably improving the health status of Central Oregon communities. Work through Manager of Community Partnerships to implement community needs assessments, execute the regional health improvement plan, and develop relationships with community organizations to address priority gaps and needs. Develop targeted programs for increasing community health and wellness to create healthier communities.
Volunteers: Support Volunteer Supervisor in running robust system-wide volunteer program with over 300 volunteers across four hospitals and a Guest Services Host program. Oversee management of three gift stores and support volunteer recruitment efforts in collaboration with Volunteer Supervisor and Community and Philanthropy Advocates. Engage volunteers as community ambassadors and donors.

Required: Bachelor’s Degree
Preferred: Master’s Degree
Required: Valid Oregon driver's license and ability to meet SCHS driving requirements.
Required: Eight plus years related experience working collaboratively in community development/community organizing in a complex organization and fundraising experience with proven record of success in soliciting major gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations. To include three years management experience.
Preferred: Leadership experience working with a governing board of directors

Must be an open and approachable individual who is able to engage people easily and has the ability to make others feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas. Ability to take initiative and work collaboratively with executive leaders, physicians, and donors. Willingness and ability to attend community events in the evenings and on weekends. Supervisory/management experience and demonstrated experience with budget preparation, planning and resource management required.
